Developer Jagex has taken the gaming community by surprise with the release of RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a fantasy sandbox survival game. Best known for their work on the iconic MMORPG RuneScape, Jagex is now venturing into new territory with a bold reimagining of its iconic universe.
New Game, Familiar Feel
Set in the beloved RuneScape universe but carving its own path, RuneScape: Dragonwilds has arrived not as an MMO but as a standalone survival experience. It offers players a fresh way to explore the mystical continent of Ashenfall without the structure of a traditional online RPG. What it lacks in MMO conventions, it makes up for in freedom, mystery, and deep survival systems that reward experimentation.
Magic‑Infused Survival Experience
The game world reacts not only to your actions but to the magic flowing through its ecosystem. Survival here goes beyond crafting and foraging. It is about adapting to an environment infused with wild Anima, a magical energy that alters flora, fauna, and even the very laws of nature. As you level up skills like woodcutting and mining, you unlock spells that transform once tedious tasks into seamless, dynamic interactions with the land.

Rich Lore
Ashenfall is a land shrouded in myth and mystery, claimed by a green‑horned god and scarred by space worms, dragonkin, and dragons. Arriving to aid troubled adventurers, you comb through journals and complete quests that reveal the continent’s history. Familiar faces like Vanescula and Zamorak cross paths with new factions, weaving a narrative that blends RuneScape’s signature wit with deeper storytelling.
Progression and Customization
Your journey begins with nothing more than rudimentary, roughly stitched garments and a bare handful of tools. As you sharpen your crafting skills, your armor and weapons evolve in both function and artistry. Character creation extends beyond initial appearance, with persistent hairstyles and cosmetic choices that become badges of honor as you progress from novice survivor to champion of Ashenfall’s wilds.

Community Driven Development
Jagex is inviting its community into the forge of Dragonwilds, continuing a tradition that began with RuneScape’s earliest days. After a closed alpha featuring 14,000 players, Early Access feedback will directly shape new skills, NPCs, and questlines. There are no rigid deadlines, as the roadmap may evolve according to player priorities, ensuring each update arrives only when it’s ready.
Sounds of the Wilds
The audio team has created a soundscape that feels just as alive as Ashenfall itself. They blend instruments like fiddle, nyckelharpa, and sitar with the haunting voices of the Pzcel Singers and vocalist Ali Baniotti. Most of the sound design focuses on ambient details such as metal creaks, rainforest sounds, and dragon roars that make the world feel real and alive.
With all we know about the game so far and its future plans, an exciting journey awaits ahead. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is available for $29.99 on Steam, with the console release yet to be announced.
