Derelicts Reveals Exciting Details About Building, Map, and Gameplay Mechanics

The building system will be similar to that in The Forest.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news about Derelicts, but after months of radio silence, solo developer Romain has finally opened the floodgates for his game. He talked about the building system, what we can expect from the world and its size, and potential future content.

The game’s building system allows players to build pretty much anywhere. The current grid-based layout enables you to create complex structures with ease. In order to start the construction of your base, you need to process logs into planks and craft nails. Similar to The Forest, Derelict makes use of a blueprint building mechanic. This means you place down ghosts of what you are building and have to provide them with resources to place them down. The addition of floating bases is on the developer’s mind but will not be added any time soon or at all due to existing tower defense mechanics. However, it may be added once they find a way to have it fit with the aforementioned mechanics.

There are also plans to make certain tasks less tedious. For example, you would be able to build a robot mule for transportation and mini sawmills for plank production. These would require electricity, which you would have to generate using the flow of water.

The size of Derelicts map while still being finalized is set to be between the size of The Forest and Sons of The Forest. Filled with various biomes, such as beaches, swamps, and forests, so players have plenty of scenic changes as they explore. Each area will present its own challenges, with the beach serving as a safe starting area. The map will feature plenty of points of interest like camper vans with randomized interiors and loot and larger structures.

The game developer is considering adding automation to the game, particularly the idea of creating a production line from raw materials to finished products. He’s also contemplating the implementation of electricity and water mechanics. Additionally, introducing transport options, such as horses or buggies, would help address potential issues with backtracking.
