If you are looking for a hardcore survival and crafting game, then this one isn’t for you. Quite opposite Above Snakes is a chill relaxing and exploring game with unique world and building mechanics. It might not offer much story wise as it is a type of sandbox game, but it has a very interesting world mechanic. In this game you don’t get a procedurally generated or already built world, instead you are the one who creates the world in a way you prefer. It is definitely something new and unique that is worth trying, and if this didn’t talk you into trying it, the game also has very active devs who are actually listening to community and trying to implement every suggestion, or fixing any issues, and in my opinion these kinds of devs deserve our support.
Above Snakes is an action and adventure game released in 2021. The player controls a brave character struggling to survive in a desert full of enemies. The game stands out with its outstanding graphics, immersive story, and challenging game mechanics that test the intelligence and skills of players.
In the game, you need to use natural resources to survive while fighting your enemies. Players can explore various places such as underground tunnels and caves, discover great weapons, and develop their tactics to win the fights. You build your own world- as you gain XP from hunting, gathering, fishing, completing tasks and quest, you can add new tiles to the the map, and lay them out how you like – biome types must border up with the same biome type, and there are a variety of tiles with various layouts to help you fit the puzzle together. And if you don’t like how your world looks or is laid out, you can craft ink, which allows you to remove a tile and replace it.
Fortunately, the game developers are open to developing the game and regularly release updates. Unfortunately, the game’s Turkish language option is not yet available. This makes it difficult for some players to fully understand the game. However, I believe that this problem will be resolved soon.
The art and design style is appealing and the game is easy enough to get into for a more casual experience. Combat is also quite simple and might turn some players off, as there is nothing but button smashing to do. Unfortuantely the controls are a bit poorely chosen. You cant rotate via mouse as in other isomometric games. No idea why they went with this unintuitive layout. The story is short but interesting, but nothing I would call great. So all in all you can have some fun for a few hours, but not a long term keeper. If you like games like this, you can give a chance.
The atmosphere of this game really immerses you in the world, creating a cozy and relaxing experience not too common in survival games! The isometric view and tile-themed mechanic lets you explore and create your own unique world that really feels like your own! There’s varied biomes to visit, exclusive collectibles within each one, and farming so you have more survival options! The only thing that makes it feel less cozy to me is the amount of hunting required for materials! It can also become a little bit repetitive and need some grinding that feels unnecessary, but that’s also a part of what makes it relaxing!
“Above Snakes” is like the Wild West met a crafty survival game, and they had a baby, a baby who likes puzzle and adventure in the same time.
Picture this: You’re out there crafting your own world, piece by piece, all while dealing with the craziness of nature and some pesky creatures. Hunting, fishing, building, and cooking are an important party of this wild adventure.
But here’s the kick, you get to mix and match different biomes (like in Dorfromantik game if you know it), each with a buffet of materials. It’s like a crafting wonderland (and that’s very enjoyable).
Hungry? Cook up some grub and craft whatever tickles your fancy. Build your base with workstations like a craft bench, a sawmill, an oven, and an anvil. Sharpen those crafting skills, and you’ll be decked out in the finest gear in no time.
And let’s talk about your crib. Customize it your way with homemade furniture and lush gardens. Picture yourself lounging on the porch, sipping something sweet, and watching the sunset. It’s like you’re living the Wild West dream (just imagine, it’s not reality you know).
So if you like puzzle adventure survival games, this one is for you !
In an alternate reality of the Wild West, Add a splash of a Mysterious Comet, Zombies, crafting and a self-creating open world and you have yourself Above Snakes.
In Above snakes you play as a young native woman called Aiyana who is traveling the world looking to find out more about her heritage, but during the night a mysterious green comet comes crashing down into the town destroying the house of a local named Joann, as well as the town’s lumber mill.
Once you awaken, you will notice that you are on a small, 1 square tile of land with the Joann’s destroyed house and a nearly destroyed lumber mill, and a body, laying in the middle of town. Joann will send you on a set of tasks which will constitute the basic tutorial of the game, on how to assemble the basic tools you will need.
As you explore, and collect resources, you will amass explorer points that allow you to create more world pieces, to connect to existing tiles making your world larger and larger as you explore, it is also a Survival game at its very heart, as you will have to monitor and keep in check several vital survival attributes, those being: Water, Food, Sanity and of course sleep.
The world building mechanic is simple in its idea, as you explore and can research additional world tiles, biome pieces and build your own sort of Jigsaw puzzle of a world, if all your pieces were square. But where the uniqueness of how you build your world is by interlocking the different biomes, you can’t just throw a forest in the middle of a plains biome you have to ease the biome in, you must interconnect the tile, with a matching side to the other tile, So, it does make you plan out a little in advance how you want your world to be made, with the idea of what type of resources you need.
You view the game through an isometric view like Project Zomboid, but you are able to rotate the view around, the graphics and music in the game are very beautiful and calming as you journey around the world but remember this is a survival game in the wild with zombies. So eventually night will fall, and when it does you will be put into a pitch-black situation, with only the light that you can provide, along with the eerie red tinges of zombie eyes, and blood. There are several different types of zombies from the Zombies that just lumber along trying to get you, to the ones who will see you and sprint toward you, and even some spitters that you will run into, and I am curious to see what other versions of zombies I might run into in the future.
The Prologue version (demo) that I am writing this review about is very nicely done, as the different mission objectives, and learning new resources, and crafting recipes will suck your time away.
The game was funded on Kickstarter by Solo Indie Dev Tobias “Tobi” Schackenberg from The Netherlands and published by Crytivo. Tobi actively looks for feedback on features on his Discord page.
Give the game a shot and pick up the Prologue on Steam for free.
