I spent some time playing Aska and what stood out to me was the focus on building and managing a Viking village instead of just surviving alone. Gathering resources, building houses, and assigning villagers to different jobs makes the world feel more alive. Watching the settlement slowly grow is pretty satisfying. That said, the gameplay loop can become repetitive after a while and the game still feels a bit rough in some areas.
Wild lands, dark forests, and a Viking life where every day is a challenge… sounds tempting? If so, get ready to dive into the world of ASKA. Grab your axe, a warm fur coat, a good dose of patience, and let’s dive together into this Nordic adventure!
In ASKA, you play as a Viking seeking survival and prosperity in a harsh and mysterious world. After escaping a devastating storm, you wash up on a wild and unexplored land. That’s where your journey begins: building a village, gathering a community, and facing the dangers of a world filled with mythological creatures and supernatural forces. The story unfolds as you work to restore a lost Viking civilization, slowly uncovering the ancient secrets hidden within this forgotten land.
ASKA’s gameplay is a clever mix of survival, building, and village management in a richly detailed Viking setting. You’ll gather resources, construct buildings, and most importantly, organize the daily life of your people. One of the key mechanics is smart villager management—each person can be assigned tasks like hunting, blacksmithing, or defending the village. The game also features a seasonal system, requiring players to anticipate changing weather and the evolving needs of their people. On top of that, there are hostile creatures to fight and mystical events to deal with, constantly balancing growth with survival.
Visually, ASKA really delivers. The vibe is cold, dark, totally Viking, and it works right away. From misty forests to frozen fjords and creepy old ruins, there’s always something cool (or spooky) to explore. And the sound design is just as solid, wind, rain, and Nordic-inspired music pull you right into the game. The immersion hits hard.
But yeah, not everything is perfect. There are some bugs—villagers forgetting their tasks, an AI that sometimes just zones out, or resources vanishing for no reason. Nothing game-breaking, but it can pull you out of the experience at times.
All in all, ASKA is a nice surprise. If you’re into playing a Viking leader and building your own survival camp, you’ll probably enjoy it. Just be ready to forgive a few rough edges. As for me, I’m gonna keep playing to see how much better it gets!
A survival and colony building game where we can establish and manage our own Viking village, and lead our comrades on their way to Valhalla by working as our slaves. In the game, we need to act according to hunger, thirst and bad weather conditions, and be prepared for possible creature attacks. The game is a time-sponge; this is because building alone is quite difficult (at least until you call a comrade). However, since we are role-playing for a purpose, we do not get bored. My first impression is this, I think it could be a much better game if it continues to be developed. Of course, optimization should be prioritized. Adding the event of settlers who are not assigned a profession, which is usually in management games, to such a non-isometric survival – base/colony building game is a very good idea. Even when playing alone, it creates a feeling that we are trying to survive together. In addition to the feeling, the fact that the player can set the plan of the building and leave the rest to the NPC construction workers is a very necessary feature for such games, because constantly building something can sometimes be tiring.
I could go on with the various aspects of survival and management crafters but Aska slaps together enough of these features in a satisfying enough manner to keep you going. The game is absolutely not difficult. You will fail the first time because winter is absolutely punishing unless you rush to a farm, plant one or two 16 plot fields of flax, and get yourself and your crew some basic clothes via the weaver workshop addon before day 21ish. If you manage that, everything else is trivial, especially after you craft your first gambeson. But despite a lack of difficulty, the way you design your village and its tasks matter a lot, and you’ll spend lots of time thinking on how to optimize everything and how to secure a steady flow of things that are not scarce (birch trees) but nevertheless require a lot of labour and steps.
Absolute recommend. Playing it with my brother. Sadly the difficulty does not scale with extra players, but the game is i early access, the expansion possibilities are endless, and the base is solid and enjoyable.
Ok, so Aska tends to be a challenging but also beautiful mixture of survival and exploration, giving you the feeling of I need to progress and defend my base at all costs at all times.
It can be very grindy and time consuming but it’s OK, it’s manageable.
I think most of the people including me will find or already found this game to be enjoyable.. it’s not perfect but it’s good.
It’s worth your time and especially if you like vikings 🙂
With that being said.. GO FOR IT!!
