Launch Disaster to Survival Genre Classic
    10
    • Pros
    • Introduced unique mechanics to the genre
    • Excellent base building
    • Thrall system adds real depth
    • God summons made PvP memorable
    • Constant updates and new content
    • Cons
    • Launch was a complete mess
    • PvP can be brutal and unforgiving
    • Can feel grindy on official servers

When Conan Exiles first launched, it was honestly chaos. I still remember the early weeks – servers going down, rollbacks, progress disappearing, bugs everywhere. It was rough. A lot of people gave up on it back then, and honestly I almost did too. But unlike many survival games that launch broken and stay broken, Conan actually recovered. Give it a year or two after release and it turned into one of the most solid survival sandbox games you could buy.

What made it stand out back then – and still does today – is that it actually brought new ideas into a genre that often copies itself. The thrall system (or “slave system” as everyone called it back then) was something we hadn’t really seen done at that scale before. Capturing NPCs, dragging them back to your base, putting them to work or using them for defense – it sounded weird at first, but it worked surprisingly well and became one of the game’s defining mechanics. Same with avatar summons. The idea of literally calling down a giant god to flatten another player’s base sounded ridiculous… until you saw it happen. Then suddenly everyone realized how cool that mechanic was. A lot of survival games that came after clearly borrowed ideas from Conan, and honestly it deserves credit for that.

The game also nails what survival fans actually care about: good base building, meaningful progression, lots of crafting, and a world that feels dangerous enough to keep you paying attention. PvP can still be brutal, and yes, getting offline raided still hurts just as much as in every other survival game, but that’s part of the genre. If you play solo or with friends, there’s an absurd amount of content here. Easily hundreds of hours.

What impresses me most is that the game is still alive and actively supported. Years later, the developers are still updating it, adding content, changing systems, and clearly investing in its future. That alone says a lot. Most survival games disappear after a year or two – Conan didn’t. It kept evolving.

At this point, I’d call it a must-play for survival sandbox fans. It had a messy start, sure, but it earned its place in the genre. And judging by the continued support, it looks like it’ll stay relevant for years to come.

Harsh Survival in the World of Conan
    8

Conan Exiles is a survival sandbox that throws you into a brutal open world and basically tells you to figure things out yourself. You start with nothing in the Exiled Lands, slowly gathering resources, crafting tools, and building your first shelter while trying not to die from hunger, enemies, or the environment. Like most survival games the early hours are about basic survival, but once the systems open up the game becomes much more interesting.

The world itself is one of the biggest highlights. The map is huge and surprisingly varied, with deserts, jungles, frozen mountains, and ancient ruins scattered everywhere. Exploring feels rewarding because you constantly run into new enemies, dungeons, and resources that help you progress. The Conan setting also gives the game a darker and more brutal tone compared to many other survival games.

Base building is a major part of the experience. You can start with a small shack but eventually build massive fortresses, temples, and entire settlements. The building system is flexible and allows for a lot of creativity. On top of that there is the thrall system where you can capture NPCs and assign them jobs like crafting, fighting, or guarding your base. This adds a nice layer of progression and makes your base feel alive.

Combat is simple but satisfying. You can use swords, spears, bows, and other weapons while fighting everything from animals to giant monsters. Some areas also contain proper dungeons with bosses and unique loot. The game becomes especially fun when playing with friends on a server, where base building, exploration, and battles feel much more dynamic.

That said the game is not without issues. Performance can be inconsistent and bugs still pop up from time to time. Solo players might also find the grind a bit heavy since gathering resources and progressing through tiers takes time. Still, if you enjoy survival games with exploration and large scale building, Conan Exiles offers a lot to do and can easily keep you busy for dozens or even hundreds of hours.

    Conan Exiles: A short review
    8
    • Pros
    • Large Open world
    • Good story
    • Great Coop
    • Challenging
    • Freedom to craft and build
    • Cons
    • Can get time consuming
    • Can get grindy
    • Occasional bugs or freezes
    • Servers can be laggy
    • Base Raids in PVP

Conan Exiles is a pretty tough survival game that can be at times an awesome and horrible experience. You start with almost nothing and have to craft, fight, and build just to stay alive. The building is actually cool, and you can make anything from a tiny camp to a giant castle if you put in the time. Combat is also good once you get the hang of it, and exploring the world is always exciting. I would suggest bringing a friend or two as the world is huge and enemies can be really tough so it is wise to have some backup. But overall, it is a good game worth trying.

    • environmental effects
    • mounts
    • Cons
    • stagnant spawns
    • longevity of many bugs
    • no threats while swimming
    • enemy ai is primitive
    • changes via Ages have severely lowered the challenge
    • imbalance in mechanics
    • variety in building is limited to skinning base elements, no true variety
    • objects that regrettably lack interaction
    • original game map has expanded a few times but no true fresh experience has appeared since 2020's Isle of Siptah.
    • Thrall sustem has mostly been undercut by easier, more immediate methods

I remember returning to Exiles for the promising Age of Sorcery. The game was in a very exciting state, though some longtime bugs remained from release & early access. The hype was there, but the reality failed to deliver. The flavour started good, and visually I enjoyed Sorcery, but it was not what was expected. I saw it through, then mostly abandoned it. (I still go through the motions but find it doesn’t play well with the game other than non combat utility). Every Age since has done more of the same. It’s changed, broken, unchanged mechanics of the combat experience, altered rewards in non beneficial ways but never truly helped the game grow. And each new element seemed as abandoned as Siptah once released.
There were many aspects expected which never came to be; new maps,
Water travel, enemy tactics & strategy, roaming/ patrolling enemies, enemies interacting with each other, etc
The Mod community kept interest alive, though many of them have moved on in recent years.
At this point, it feels less of a game experience, and mostly an environment to decorate while in free place mode.
The streaming folk seem to support this.

I can start by saying that I find Conan Exiles, which I appreciate when compared to similar ones, much more visually satisfying.
You start the game in the middle of a desert, naked and defenseless. Without wasting any time, you can collect the brushwood and stones around you and make clothes and simple weapons out of them. You need to reach the nearest water source and build a shelter somewhere nearby. Sandstorms in the desert are deadly. Feeding your stomach is not the issue. You can even survive by eating insects. But there is no need to be miserable, if you are not going to hunt, you can at least steal eggs.
As you level up and get enough resources, you become able to make leather clothes, metal armor and weapons. It is up to you to reduce the weight of these armor and weapons and increase their durability and damage. You can also make dye from the plants you collect and change the color of each piece of your armor.
Fights can be a bit annoying until you get used to them. Your enemies are humans, animals, fantastic beasts, the damned and undead creatures. You will encounter minor and major bosses. Although minors are generally found in certain areas of the map, they can appear in different places from time to time. For example, right on your doorstep! The majors are always in the same place. It may be necessary to develop various strategies to kill them.
The map is huge. Deserts, large oases, tropical forests, snowy hills, volcanic mountains… You encounter creatures suitable for each habitat. Along the way, you come across mysterious temples and sinister towers. While they are seriously intriguing, it would be wise not to dive in at low levels.
Your companion fighting alongside you gains experience and levels up with you. However, you can also kidnap and train wild animal cubs.
The belief system has gained functionality beyond role-playing. You can decide which god you will worship.
In my opinion, the most important factor that puts the game ahead of its counterparts is the aesthetics of the structures you can build. If building construction is among your top reasons for liking the genre, Conan Exiles will greatly satisfy you.
There’s even a story based on “Conan the Barbarian” that you can learn by reading the diaries and inscriptions you come across and talking to the few friendly NPCs, which isn’t really a story-driven genre.
As for simplicity, of course the difficulty level can be adjusted. I’m not someone who likes challenges. Sometimes I can get from one end of the map to the other without having to fight just a few times, and I’m quite happy with that.
Despite its shortcomings, Conan Exiles does not fail to provide the player with feelings of curiosity, excitement, tension and fear. I’ve been playing like I didn’t have a life for a long time and I didn’t get bored. If you really love the genre, you should definitely give it a try.

Still my most played survival crafting game to dat
    9
    • Pros
    • Continual updates/development
    • AMAZING BUILDING
    • Customisable difficulty
    • Mods for improved longevity
    • Wave defence events
    • Good storyline to be uncovered
    • No requirement to play a storyline (sandbox)
    • Climbing
    • Cons
    • Static spawns
    • No terraforming

I have logged thousands of hours in the game and constantly return to it after trying something new for a while. Updates keep the game feeling fresh every time I return.

Hands down the most reliably satisfying game in my library.

Surviving in the world of Conan
    8
    • Pros
    • Large world
    • Lot of building types
    • Big Bosses
    • Settings to personalize your world
    • Mod support
    • Cons
    • AI is easily tricked (Enemy as well as friendly)
    • You can not unlock all building recipes on one character
    • Co-op sometimes does not work

Conan Exiles is a Survival Crafting game set in the world of Conan the Barbarian (sadly not the Arnold one since you can meet Conan in game.)

The world of Conan is very large and if the main land wasn’t enough there are a few extra islands as well. There is also a lot to explore and there are different biomes as well that kind of work as a border for its difficulty.
You can really get lost in this game just going around and exploring since there are buildings or other points of interest around every corner of the game.
In each biome you can come across a larger structure with a boss inside of it. Your main goal in the game is to defeat these bosses and gather the items required to unlock your bracelet since that item is what is keeping you trapped in this area.
You don’t have to fight these bosses alone since there is a system in the game that converts captured enemies to your side pretty much making them your fight slave. These thralls come in different tiers and can be either human or animal.

Setting up a base is necessary in this game due to the amount of crafting stations you need to build and the amount of supplies you find.
This is where Conan Exiles excels in. There are so many decorations and other building blocks that you could really make your dream base. and if the base game does not have what you want there are cosmetic DLC that include a ton more buildings as well as mod support (at least on pc)

The game can feel a little bit grindy if you go for a larger base however the game allows you to change settings increase the amount of stone you get from rocks or the amount of wood from trees and much more.

Some of the major flaws I have with the game are that you are unable to unlock all recipes with one character. When leveling up you get points and you spent these points to unlock recipes like a pickaxe or decorations. but when you max level you have nowhere near enough points to get all of them. And probably the one that I hate the most is the way Co-op is not well supported. There are multiplayer servers and you can set up your own (for a fee of course) But since I play this game with a friend who is not around often being able to make a co-op server is a lot easier and free as well. It comes with the drawback that the second player can not walk too far away from the hosting player but these are small issues that I can live with. But most of the time Co-op does not even work for us which is a real shame.

You can easily lose over a hundred hours in the base game of Conan Exiled, and if that was not enough there is also DLC with a whole new world to explore.
