Dune awakening is a great leveling adventure with a nice progression, the quests are really barebone but the exploration and the progression and the balance of the different material is great. Vehicles are games changer and will really impact your adventure, but the game kinda fall shorts when you reach the last tier and need to go pvp. Because it lack a real objective you get to the desert to pvp and get better gear to pvp and get better gear. It really lack an endgoal.
Dune Awakening can be described in very short as a Sci Fi Conan Exiles, even the sand reminds of it as in Conan you spend the early game in the desert.
But that is a short way, the long one may start by the fact that Funcom has adapted another famous book saga to the survival gaming genre, and when the source is good, the game is usually also good.
We have to survive in Arrakis, the famous planet of the Dune books that is mostly desert because that is the environment where the giant bugs live, and those bugs are the most precious living being in the whole galaxy, they produce the Spice that is needed for space navigation and also enhances all psychic powers. And the bugs are also the reason why the planet can’t be terraformed, so living there is really hard.
You create your character and choose a family form the book ones and that also involves skills and from here, good luck, you crash on the planet and have to find the sleeper but for that you will have to start farming basic materials until you can build a big base, and trust me, the art and designs on the building pieces are awesome and perfectly fit in the thematic.
Although you can create private servers, now, the game is PvP only, no option to join PvE servers, and that can be problematic for those who don’t want to get involved into those activities, they decided to go the Rust way on this game but still you can try to find a community with a good server and hope you are not raided, but that is part of the fun of the game, Arrakis is harsh planet so the game is harsh.
Excellent game that tests our survival skills and hey, when you can finally get an ornithopter and explore on it it is awesome
Dune Awakening is an open-world, survival MMO set in the Frank Herbert world of Dune. With intrigue, sand, and spice flowing from every corner. It takes place similarly to the movies, where you, taking the place of Paul Atreides, must go to Arrakis, where you must find the lost Fremen, who apparently disappeared. That is basically the story in a nutshell. There is, I am happy to say, a pretty decent story layered into this game. It’s far better than the crumbs you get in Conan Exiles. Let’s break down the different aspects.
Building. First and foremost, when I start playing any survival game, how does the building aspect work? Is it easy, or is it stupid… Looking at you, Ark. Anyway, no, this game is simple and straightforward, with responsive snapping to the building material. Walls, foundations, etc. They all work wonderfully with the environment. And the extra icing is the sand that surrounds you, can completely destroy your base if you’re not careful. It’s a nice touch. The only critique I have about the building is the staking system. It’s got a few interface issues, and it’s pretty vague on how it works.
How is combat? Between swords, shields, and guns. I’ve seen very little issue. The skills you get help you slide easily into close quarters if you desire. While shooting from long distances is also possible. Even the classes of Soldier, Mentat, Swordmaster, and Jesuet feel perfectly in tune with the combat system. They all have their strength, and even multiclassing has some synergies that just make sense. Shooting feels impactful and gratifying. Using a sword against a shield requires slow, methodical attacks. There is no button mashing here.
Survival, another of the core mechanics of the game, is pretty well done. I was afraid water would be an issue. Once you progress fast enough through the game, or specifically through the trials, Water becomes a non-issue. Worms, another staple of the Dune universe are of course, something you need to watch out for. Piss them off, and don’t give them the respect they require, and they will eat you. However, even they are predictable enough and become less of a threat later on. The danger comes from balancing all this with being out in the sun and the traps the surface of Arrakis hides. It’s not Green Hell hard, so take that as you will. I would like to see a food system, though. Just add a new layer of difficulty and balance. It’s odd that it was omitted.
Now, what about that PVP? It’s changing as of writing this, so while the game launched with a massive chunk of endgame placed behind PVP, it’s become less of an issue. The biggest complaint I have comes from the Landsraad. This is Funcoms version of doing dailies in MMO’s, or Mobile games. And its… Well, for a guild of two, it’s impossible to complete. And you want to complete them because new content, weapons, items, armor, etc., are all in there, waiting for you to claim.

I recommend:*
– Well-respected Dune universe and lore. Very immersive and addictive.
– Engaging, intuitive gameplay, good difficulty, simple but interesting mechanics.
– Ornithopter flight is a real pleasure.
– Magnificent art direction and music.
– Enjoyable construction, not demanding on resources, perfect for builders.
– Atypical game with good PVE content and a large PVP desert map.
– Engaging story-driven main quests. Well-crafted characters. Superb voice acting.
– Playable solo. Best in groups. Perfect for guilds vs. guilds.
– Can seem redundant.
There are flaws, still bugs, a limited endgame.
A game to follow in the long run.
*- Average optimization. Unpredictable depending on the configuration.
– Stuttering, low FPS in certain locations and around player bases.
So, I’ve sunk about 350 hours into Dune: Awakening and honestly… this game SLAPS. First thing you notice is the world design – it’s absolutely stunning. The vibe of Arrakis is just chef’s kiss. You walk out into the desert and it legit feels like you’re about to get eaten by a sandworm any second. The storms, the lightning, the way the sand moves under your feet – peak immersion.
Now, what I love most: this is a real survival game done right. You know how a lot of new survival games try to reinvent the wheel and forget to make the basics fun? Yeah, not here. Resource farming? Addictive. Progression loop? Smooth and satisfying. Everything from crafting gear to upgrading your setup just flows. It nails that “one more run” feeling and that’s something most games in the genre miss these days.
But… it’s not perfect. The biggest issue for me is PVP balance. Vehicles are kinda busted. Like, you’re chasing a guy in a copter for five minutes dumping rockets into him, and he’s just like “lol no”. On top of that, the whole deep desert situation at launch was rough – felt like a punishment for solo players. Devs did rework it, which is great, but still, you feel the scars. And then bases in PVP zones? Man, what’s even the point? You don’t get much for making a proper base, and even if you do, it’s probably gone before you log back in.
Still though, despite those flaws I’m hooked. If you want a survival game that respects your time and gives you a world worth getting lost in, this is it. Just… maybe stay out of PVP unless you like pain.
What’s worth mentioning is that the developers behind Dune: Awakening are the same ones who made Conan Exiles. They have been supporting Conan for over a decade and they’ve already announced plans to take care of their new project for years to come.
Great game, of course, its DUNE!, really fun of the lore, I’ve read all the books, the game is a survival like Conan Exile, with friends is really enjoyable, in solo it may be boring after some time, the talents tree of classes aren’t that great, u can still mix the classes but if you really want to be competitive there aren’t lots of combination worth it.
