Eldest Souls: Master the Art of Retry
    8
    • Pros
    • Unique Combat Mechanics
    • Beautiful Pixel Art
    • Intense Boss Battles
    • Great satisfaction after every wins
    • Cons
    • Steep Difficulty Curve
    • Repetitive aspect

In Eldest Souls, players are often divided into two distinct categories: those who tackle the toughest challenges with unwavering determination, mastering every move with surgical precision in what are known as “hardcore” games, and those who, despite their perseverance, often find themselves hesitating in the face of obstacles, grumbling and cursing every mistake made. Yet, nestled between these two extremes, lies a third category of players to which I belong: those who persevere despite the trials, even if their talent is only slightly above average. For me, “Eldest Soul” is a demanding challenge that pushes the limits of patience and skills, but nonetheless offers unparalleled satisfaction once the obstacles are overcome. So, don your armor, brush your beautiful pink hair, and wield your sword as we plunge into the tough adventure of Eldest Souls.

In terms of story, the game transports you to the ruins of a kingdom once dominated by ancient gods. These fallen deities, thirsty for vengeance, have allied to annihilate humanity. As the Guardian, you are the last line of defense against their fury. Your mission, should you choose to accept it (Mr. Hunt…): confront these ancient gods, defeat them, and absorb their souls to become the Soul of Souls, well, that kind of title isn’t earned easily, you know?

While Eldest Souls draws inspiration from “Souls-like” games, it distinguishes itself with its unique approach to combat. Here, there are no hordes of enemies to slaughter, but titanic duels against Big Bosses, which is expected given that it’s a “Boss Rush” game. Each ancient god presents a unique challenge, with their own attacks and patterns. The key to victory lies in observation and precision. Learn to read your enemies’ movements, parry their attacks at the right moment, and exploit their weaknesses, this will be your daily routine in the game. Each hard-earned victory is a source of immense satisfaction. The intensity of the battles is such that even the most seasoned players can feel sweat beading on their foreheads with every hurried movement.

The health management stands out with a unique mechanic. Instead of relying on traditional potions, players must effectively parry enemy attacks to regain health. A successful parry reflects a portion of the damage back to the enemy, simultaneously increasing the player’s health bar. This proactive approach to combat adds a strategic dimension, encouraging players to prioritize defense over blind attack.
Sometimes, you may encounter characters that are quite rare in the game and who will ask you to bring them an item, which could be characterized as secondary quests, but anyway, as it’s a boss rush, it’s the battles against the gods that will occupy most of your time.

Graphically, Eldest Souls adopts a sumptuous pixel art style, lending the game a unique atmosphere. The environments are both dark and enchanting, while the bosses boast imposing and memorable designs. The orchestral soundtrack perfectly underscores the intensity of the battles and the magnitude of the challenge that awaits you.

Eldest Souls is not a game for the faint of heart. It is difficult, punishing, and DEMANDING. But for those who rise to the challenge, it’s well worth it. The satisfaction of defeating a boss after hours of relentless struggle is incomparable, as in any self-respecting Souls-like game.

So, are you ready to face the ancient gods, to beat them, to slaughter them, to annihilate them, and finally carve your name into legend? Eldest Souls awaits you… if you have the courage, of course.

Challenging and rewarding experience! Good variety of bosses and 3 different fighting styles to mix up the gameplay. Some bosses I beat fairly quickly and others gave me some trouble. It took more than a few attempts to learn how to take them down and the good thing is that once you die, you get back into the fight immediately. Highly recommend for souls-like fans!
