    The City Must Survive
    7
    • Pros
    • Excellent expansion into the Frostpunk universe and adds more lore
    • Great strategic depth and has good replayability
    • Cons
    • Steep learning curve, especially for new players
    • Dramatic change from the first game
    • More strategy than action

A city survival building game that takes place decades after the first Frostpunk game. Now while much larger and more sophisticated, I feel that it can be very challenging to players, especially to those who are new to the franchise. Best to take your time, and research when needed.

Good, but nowhere near the first frostpunk.
    6
    • Pros
    • Strong atmosphere
    • Bigger city management
    • Tough moral choices
    • Cons
    • Lacks the magic of the first Frostpunk
    • Clunky mechanics
    • Small issues pile up

I’ve been trying not to be too salty but Frostpunk 2 just isn’t Frostpunk 1 and for me that’s a problem because the original was better in a lot of ways. It’s hard to pin down one major flaw but there are a bunch of small issues – balance quirks, pacing hiccups and design choices – that add up and make the experience feel less satisfying. I wanted the same bleak intensity and smart moral tension but too often i feel pulled out of it by things that don’t quite land. Still, there are good parts and effort put in, but right now it just doesn’t hit the same as the first one did for me.

It is a good game, but don't expect much
    6
    • Pros
    • It continues the history of the first game 30 years later and does a very good job.
    • The campaign is not composed of scenarios anymore, now everything is part of the same game, making the experience and the world more alive.
    • It is not Frostpunk 1.5. The game is new, uses a completely new system: districts, same as civilization 6. New techs, A completely new law system, more realistic based on politics, you don't have supreme leader authority anymore, now you need to play the politics game to do anything and a new system for managing resources that is a huge upgrade from the first game.
    • Cons
    • The UI is a mess, it will mislead you a lot, there are a lot of features that are not clear to the player and will take you time to figure it out. This is the worst feature of the game.
    • The game balance is a bit off. In the first game you were under pressure the entire game, now the start is hard, but once you go above the curve you will drown in resources and the game becomes trivial, even on captain difficulty. You will rush the time just to see the history after chapter 3.
    • Your choices don't matter as much anymore. Killed 180 children on a coal mine accident? Don't worry, you will get more population overtime just by existing, making deaths meaningless. And yes, they removed the graveyard from the first game. Population now are just another renewable resource. Bad feature decision.
    • The politics system seems to be there just to accommodate twitch integration. It is just a numbers game. IE, you need 51 votes out of 100 to pass most laws. Let's say you have 25 in favor, 50 neutral and 25 against. You will get those 50 neutral to pick between 22 and 28 votes in favor 100% of the time (the range for neutrals is -3+3), so lets say you have 30 votes in favor and 50 neutral, you will manage to pass the law 100% of the time with at least 52 votes, once you realize this system gets very boring, it is very predictable and this breaks the whole point of the system.
    • The game in general feels very scripted compared to the first one. Making your choices way less impactful, what you choose changes very little.
    • You can't wipe out a faction no matter how hard you try, this is because of the last chapter, as I said everything feels very scripted. I can't say anything else without spoilers.
    • Automatons and people moving on the streets are completely removed from the game, now they are just a number resource: "workers". This is most likely due to optimization, since the game is way wider now.
    • The game now works on a week time system, this takes away the immersion of the daily cycle the first one had.

I love Frostpunk 2; I cannot grasp why so many of the negative reviews are purely because the game doesn’t “feel like the first”. That’s literally the point of a sequel. It’s supposed to be new gameplay, mechanics and ideas, in the same universe and theme of the original. In my eyes, the game expertly conveys this; the new features are fantastic – for example, I find the addition of the council a brilliant innovation that drastically highlights the new threat posed to the city

Yes, there are issues, and bugs (none of which game breaking as far as I’ve experienced so far, having completed the game twice) and definitely room for improvement in areas, but the game is brilliant and I find it of rife impertinence.

    Frostpunk 2: Surviving the cold
    10

If you ever played original Frostpunk and liked it, you are going to love Frostpunk 2.

Let me start by saying that this is not really my cup of tea, and after trying the first game I quickly understood why people loved it, so I had to try the second part and I became obsessed with it.

Frostpunk 2 has everything that was great about the first game but more. City building and survival is still at the core, but now there’s a lot more politics and faction management, which adds a whole new layer of complexity. The atmosphere just the same as in previous part is as cold and brutal as before and the visuals are simply stunning. The soundtrack and sound design does a great job of making you feel the weight of every decision.
One thing it does so well is that it makes you think. Balancing resources, keeping people alive and dealing with tough moral choices makes every play through feel unique and personal too. The new faction system adds depth, and you have to navigate political struggles while trying to keep your city from falling apart.

That being said, I always try to be objective, so I have to say there are some downsides too. The game can feel overwhelming at times especially for new players, I know it felt like that to me. There’s a lot to manage, and some mechanics aren’t explained as well as they could be. It would’ve been nice to have a better tutorial or more guidance early on, or maybe it is just me, I like it when I have to do my own research and find out as much as I can about the game. Also, while the faction system is interesting, it can feel like it limits your choices rather than expands them.

But all in all Frostpunk 2 is a great sequel that improves on the original, if you liked the first game this is a must-play. Just be prepared for some tough choices and time flying, since before you know it you will be stuck playing it for hours!
