A city survival building game that takes place decades after the first Frostpunk game. Now while much larger and more sophisticated, I feel that it can be very challenging to players, especially to those who are new to the franchise. Best to take your time, and research when needed.
I’ve been trying not to be too salty but Frostpunk 2 just isn’t Frostpunk 1 and for me that’s a problem because the original was better in a lot of ways. It’s hard to pin down one major flaw but there are a bunch of small issues – balance quirks, pacing hiccups and design choices – that add up and make the experience feel less satisfying. I wanted the same bleak intensity and smart moral tension but too often i feel pulled out of it by things that don’t quite land. Still, there are good parts and effort put in, but right now it just doesn’t hit the same as the first one did for me.
I love Frostpunk 2; I cannot grasp why so many of the negative reviews are purely because the game doesn’t “feel like the first”. That’s literally the point of a sequel. It’s supposed to be new gameplay, mechanics and ideas, in the same universe and theme of the original. In my eyes, the game expertly conveys this; the new features are fantastic – for example, I find the addition of the council a brilliant innovation that drastically highlights the new threat posed to the city
Yes, there are issues, and bugs (none of which game breaking as far as I’ve experienced so far, having completed the game twice) and definitely room for improvement in areas, but the game is brilliant and I find it of rife impertinence.
If you ever played original Frostpunk and liked it, you are going to love Frostpunk 2.
Let me start by saying that this is not really my cup of tea, and after trying the first game I quickly understood why people loved it, so I had to try the second part and I became obsessed with it.
Frostpunk 2 has everything that was great about the first game but more. City building and survival is still at the core, but now there’s a lot more politics and faction management, which adds a whole new layer of complexity. The atmosphere just the same as in previous part is as cold and brutal as before and the visuals are simply stunning. The soundtrack and sound design does a great job of making you feel the weight of every decision.
One thing it does so well is that it makes you think. Balancing resources, keeping people alive and dealing with tough moral choices makes every play through feel unique and personal too. The new faction system adds depth, and you have to navigate political struggles while trying to keep your city from falling apart.
That being said, I always try to be objective, so I have to say there are some downsides too. The game can feel overwhelming at times especially for new players, I know it felt like that to me. There’s a lot to manage, and some mechanics aren’t explained as well as they could be. It would’ve been nice to have a better tutorial or more guidance early on, or maybe it is just me, I like it when I have to do my own research and find out as much as I can about the game. Also, while the faction system is interesting, it can feel like it limits your choices rather than expands them.
But all in all Frostpunk 2 is a great sequel that improves on the original, if you liked the first game this is a must-play. Just be prepared for some tough choices and time flying, since before you know it you will be stuck playing it for hours!
