Green Hell: Conquer the Jungle or Die Trying
    8
    • Pros
    • An immersive realism
    • A visually captivating environment
    • Challenging yet rewarding gameplay
    • A variety of challenges
    • Cons
    • Unbalanced combat
    • Clunky controls

What if one day you found yourself lost, alone in the heart of the impenetrable Amazon rainforest, with no map or backup plan?
Your only mission: survive. No tourist guide or high-tech equipment here, just you, your instincts, and a forest ready to devour you at the slightest mistake. Between hungry jaguars, poisonous plants, and a relentless climate, every step could be your last.
Strangely enough, Green Hell brings back a memory from my childhood—when I stumbled upon a 90s film with the same ominous name. It was disturbingly gory, and to this day, I find it wild that I even watched it as a kid. That visceral experience stayed with me, and now, revisiting this world in a game feels like confronting that eerie jungle all over again.
So, are you ready to face hunger, thirst, and a merciless nature? Strap on your multifunction watch, grab a stick, and dive into the green inferno of Green Hell!

In Green Hell, you play as Jake Higgins, an adventurous anthropologist lost in the Amazon while searching for Mia, his mysteriously missing wife. Guided only by a multifunction watch she gave him, Jake must not only survive the numerous dangers of the jungle but also unravel the secrets of a story interwoven with human relationships, local traditions, and supernatural mysteries. This journey is more than just a physical quest, it’s a psychological dive into the depths of survival and guilt.

From a gameplay perspective, Green Hell delivers a realistic and unforgiving survival experience in a hostile environment. You start with nothing, forced to learn survival skills on your own. Resource gathering is slow and demanding, as you must craft temporary tools to build rudimentary shelters. Every action consumes energy, from carrying materials to chopping wood, all while managing your food, hydration, and hygiene needs. The limited inventory adds further complexity to strategic decision-making.

The game emphasizes experimentation: no recipes for weapons, tools, or meals are provided. You must combine items randomly or rely on intuition, enhancing immersion. Meanwhile, ever-present dangers, illness, injuries, attacks from animals or hostile tribes, keep the tension high. Combat, though rare, is often fatal, either directly or due to subsequent injuries. This approach heightens realism, although certain imbalances, particularly in fights with animals like jaguars, can be frustrating.

Visually, Green Hell immerses players in a vibrant and detailed Amazon. Dense foliage, shimmering rivers, and dynamic weather cycles create a breathtaking environment. Every visual element, from realistic textures to local wildlife, enhances the game’s oppressive and wild atmosphere. Lighting and shadows are critical, especially at night, where a lurking snake can easily remain unseen. The sound design is equally noteworthy, contributing significantly to immersion. Ambient sounds are not just atmospheric but vital for survival, warning of dangers like snakes or bees.

Green Hell is not a survival game for the faint-hearted. Its unforgiving difficulty forces players to learn from every mistake and death to progress. With its ever-present dangers and demanding realism, it offers an immersive adventure that tests both patience and ingenuity. If you’re ready to embrace this brutal challenge and tame the green inferno, you’re in for a memorable, but merciless, survival experience. Hardcore players, this one’s for you!

    • Pros
    • Deep, realistic survival mechanics
    • Beautiful, detailed rainforest environment
    • Satisfying crafting and resource management
    • Immersive atmosphere with sanity effects
    • Cons
    • Punishing difficulty.
    • Some bugs and glitches
    • Requires a lot of patience

Green Hell throws you deep into the Amazon rainforest, where survival is brutal and unforgiving. From the very beginning, the game immerses you in its lush, terrifying world as you gather resources, build shelters, and try not to get eaten by jaguars or die from a snake bite 😬. It’s not just about hunger and thirst—mental health plays a role too, which adds another layer of challenge. Hearing voices or seeing hallucinations when your sanity drops? Yeah, it’s called “Green Hell” for a reason 😅.

The survival mechanics are realistic and punishing. You’ll have to manage everything from wounds to infections, and figuring out which plant or animal is going to kill you or save your life is a constant gamble. The attention to detail is impressive, and it’s what makes the game both exciting and stressful at the same time. The first time I crafted fire or successfully hunted, it felt incredibly satisfying 🔥.

That being said, the game is tough—really tough. There’s a steep learning curve, and I found myself dying over and over again, sometimes from things I didn’t even notice, like parasites or poisonous frogs 🐸. The crafting system is deep but takes some time to get used to. Playing in co-op mode with friends lightens the load a bit and makes the experience more fun, but solo play can feel lonely and overwhelming.

Despite its difficulty, Green Hell is a fantastic survival game. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for a real challenge and love games where survival feels raw and real, this one is worth diving into !!

    Brutal Survival Game
    7
    • Pros
    • Good Challenge For Advanced Players
    • Nice Graphics
    • Lots To Explore
    • Very Detailed Survival System
    • Cons
    • Not A Beginners Game
    • Trial And Error Feels Punishing
    • Crafting Feels So Slow
    • Not Always Intuitive

I enjoy survival games, but I don’t think I’d consider myself an advanced player so this game is quite a bit of a challenge. If you are new to survival games just be aware that this one is quite a bit more difficult than some others in the genre. If you enjoy a challenge then Green Hell is the hell you’re looking for! The game is beautiful and very detailed, exploring feels very satisfying and I would love exploring it without all the things out to kill you. The survival system is incredibly detailed in ways I haven’t experienced in other games, so it’s a bit more realistic in that regard. There is a lot to manage and keep track of to keep your survivor healthy and thriving. A lot of things in this game are trial and error like the crafting, and it isn’t always intuitive. It feels a bit punishing at times especially when it’s the difference between figuring it out or dying. It can be difficult to really get anything going, but I am sure once you start getting the hang of it the game is a blast. I haven’t been playing very long so I’m still at that stage of trying to get things going so I am not constantly dying. It goes on sale a lot, so I do recommend giving it a try because it overall it seems like a well done game.

A Way to Challenge Yourself... Or A Place to Build
    9
    • Pros
    • Building system just keeps getting better with each update.
    • Treehouses!
    • Building on Water!
    • Gorgeous land - with varied terrain and places to go and explore.
    • Committed devs & free updates.
    • The animal and farming system is SO darn cute.. and it keeps getting better.
    • The crafting system is very much a trial and error system. It invites exploration and "just trying things" to see what works.
    • Cons
    • Sometimes hard to find the recipes for things you want.
    • The "map" system is difficult to understand.
    • Story Campaign is brutally hard, and some of it is not explained well.
    • The nutrition system is hard to navigate, hard to learn, and hard to manage to stay healthy.
    • Spiders. (And snakes, if you're afraid of those.)
    • Sometimes the game feels SO large.. that you feel like if you wander too far, you'll NEVER find your way "home" again.
    • No way to put "beacons" on the "map".
    • Fighting - it feels very difficult, almost impossible at times.
    • Leaving a fire on at home base - just don't do it. Natives will invade and squish you. Word to the wise.
    • The crafting system is very much a trial and error system. There may be a high number of "errors" and confusion before you finally start to figure out what works. Nothing will really point you in the right direction if you're utterly lost.

Excuse the large number of cons – I have some very strong feelings about the difficulty of this game. I’ve attempted the Story Campaign more times than I can count, but I always get to a point where I’m either hopelessly lost, at a place where I’m nearly guaranteed to die, or just so frustrated I want to start over. HOWEVER. That does NOT diminish my love of this game. I’ve put hundreds of hours into building structures in the game, designing fun home bases, and PLANNING for the next time I try story mode. I have every intention of actually finishing it. Someday. Before then, however, I will still while away more hundreds of hours building, collecting things, and just enjoying the Zen nature of this game on easy mode. I do dip my toes into harder modes in the “Endless Survival” mode – practicing for the day I eventually attempt (and hopefully beat) the Story again.

All that being said – this game, for me, is pretty much the cream of the crop of Survival games on the market. It tries to be as realistic as possible (sometimes to a fault – I’m looking at you, nutrition system!) and it manages to pull it off quite well, I feel. The jungle is a dangerous place, and even on lower difficulties, unless you specifically turn off some dangers, you will always need to be alert for sounds of the critters around you. However, this game is simply gorgeous. Looking out over the jungle from a cliff you’ve managed to find the way to the top of, or the top of your treehouse… is a feeling that will stick with you.

I highly recommend giving this game a try!

This game is themed on survival in the forest and is more of a simulation style, so it will be a green hell for casual players, just like its name. We first bought it to play Coop with my friend, but the game is really difficult. Even Forest games sometimes seem simple compared to this game.

There are 4 different modes in the game. I played all of them except Survival. Spirits of Amazonia offered a much fuller and better experience in terms of content. It was much better than the main story. The map was both larger and felt fuller in terms of activities.

If we talk about difficulties, the most difficult one is to survive. You should look at your watch and find out whichever protein, carbohydrate, fat and water values are missing. If you drink water directly from a dirty river, your stomach will become parasitic. If you sleep on the floor, worms will penetrate your skin and your sanity will decrease. You need meat for energy, hunting for meat, and an arrow or spear for hunting. If you don’t pull off the leeches that stick to your body, your mental health will decrease. If you eat with dirty hands, your stomach will become parasitic again, and if the food you eat is rotten or inedible, you will get food poisoning and start vomiting. While walking in the forest, you may be bitten by spiders, snakes and stingrays and develop a fever as a result of poisoning. You need to find tobacco and molinera to remove the resulting poison. You may be attacked by a puma when you least expect it, or you may come across enemy tribes on patrol. You may be stung by a scorpion while walking around the cave. If you fall from a high place, your leg or arm will be peeled. If you don’t get enough sleep, your mental health will worsen. Eating human flesh and raw meat will also make you crazy. If you hit a thorny tree, you will be poisoned again and get a fever. Crocodiles will attack on the beach and piranhas in the lake. So, as you can see, the hardest thing is to survive in the forest.

So what is there as an activity? First you need to find the maps. After you find the maps, you need to learn to use the compass because you can see yourself on the map, that is, where you are.
You will not be able to see the point, you will only find drawings on the map showing where the caves and places you discovered are located. Apart from this, to gain the trust of the natives, you can find lost children, dig graves for murdered tribe members, clean poisoned rivers, rescue imprisoned tribe members, heal sick tribe members, repair totems and give fishermen what they need. You can also collect drawings called legends and try to find what they tell at the end. Villagers, after security, you can enter their trials and try to pass the exam.
It has a magnificent atmosphere, forest environment and views that will draw you in.

A unique survival experience. Just Perfect.

    Amazing survival game
    10
    • Pros
    • Lots of different animals
    • Nice crafting system
    • Large map to explore
    • Cons
    • Game can be buggy sometimes
    • No way to learn some things except trial & error

Green Hell is, so far, my absolute favorite open world survival craft game. I love the environment of being in a tropical rainforest, and there are a lot of things I feel this game does better than other games. The game also received consistent updates and new content.

One of the things I love is the nutrition system. You can’t just hoard one type of food and eat it, you need carbs, fats, and proteins. Each of these you get from different plants and animals, with each one giving different amounts. This makes you really go out and explore more and be on the constant search for food.

I also love the health system. You can get scratches and lacerations, these can get infected and you need something specific to treat the infection or you will die. You can get leeches stuck to you and worms under your skin. You have to keep an eye on your sanity or you’ll have hallucinations. You can get poisoned, parasites, and rashes. The game won’t hold your hand on any of this either, you’re either gonna have to google what things do, or figure it out with trial and error. Some things you have to use in certain ways: eating it, boiling it, or making a salve. Ingesting the wrong things can be deadly.

The game also has an incredible crafting & building system that has had many updates, and will have more I’m sure. There are a ton of things you can learn to make. Traps, weapons, multiple types of beds/shelters, cooking racks, animal husbandry stuff & more. You can make a huge wooden fortress, a tree house, or a floating platform on the river.

I feel like Green Hell is definitely harder to learn and play than most other survival games, but it’s the complexity and extra realism that makes it much more fun for me. You’re gonna die a lot, but each time you’re coming back with more knowledge and a little bit more prepared.

Green Hell: Rumble in the Jungle
    10

Being stranded in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest and trying to survive is an adventure like no other. As a stranded explorer, you’ll have to fight your way through the dense jungles, face deadly wildlife, and struggle with the harsh realities of survival in one of the world’s most unforgiving environments.

The thing I like the most about the Green Hell is, of course, the coop mode, but other than that I love the realism of the game. Everything from the foliage to the wildlife, every aspect of the rainforest feels so real and alive. The game’s attention to detail makes exploration both thrilling and dangerous, as you never know what dangers lurk around.

Survival in Green Hell is a constant struggle against hunger, thirst, and disease. Crafting tools, hunting for food, and building shelters are essential for staying alive in this hostile wilderness. The game is by no means easy, and it will give you a real Hell, and you need to be prepared to die a lot, either from animals, poison or disease you will die more than once. But once you get a hang of it, it is going to be an awesome game.

As much as the game’s realism brings it to the next level, it can also be one of the bad things in the game. The unforgiving nature of survival may frustrate some players, especially those looking for a more relaxed gaming experience. For example, just sleeping on the wet ground can get you killed, or a small scratch can get infected and give you a fever, causing you to die. There are a lot of ways to die, but be persistent and you will succeed.

Despite its challenges, Green Hell is an amazing and immersive survival experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Its beautiful visuals, realistic gameplay mechanics, and sense of immersion are just part of the things that Green Hell has to offer. Word of the advice when you start playing the first time, save often, or better yet get a friend to play with you, it will mean a lot.

    A masterpiece under development
    9
    • Pros
    • Captures the setting perfectly
    • Survival mechanics interact with each other
    • Feels somewhat "realistic"
    • Cons
    • Needs more variety in survival mechanics
    • Lacks optimization

This is absolutely the best wilderness survival game you can play right now. The core of the game is taking care of your needs for carbs, fats, protein and water. You also need to sleep and take care of your energy. To do so, you must collect different types of food from hunting and gathering and prepare them in different ways. For example, there’s a mushroom abundantly found in the forest that causes food poisoning when eaten raw, but can be prepared into a soup that gives a small amount of carbs and hydration.

Some injuries and diseases, like poison from snake bite, can be treated with wild plants. Being poisoned will also give you a fever, which will make you dehydrate and lose energy faster. Losing too much energy from the fever may lead you to becoming too tired to make a friction fire to boil the water you need to survive dehydration, which may lead you to drinking contaminated water… which itself may give you parasites that will make you consume carbs/protein/fats faster. Or you may collapse from exhaustion on the ground, making you get parasites on your skin, which in turn will reduce your sanity. Losing too much sanity may give you hallucinations that can end up with you getting hurt.

This constant interaction between the different survival systems at play is the single greatest strength Green Hell has. The problem with the game is that you always have enough space in your backpack to carry treatment for every single injury or disease possible. This means that eventually you’ll be too familiar with the game to have any tension. Green Hell absolutely needs more fauna, flora, injuries and diseases to make this web of interactions between the systems more complex and keep players on their toes at all times.

That being said, the gameplay loop is there and is already satisfying. It just has the potential to become so much more.

    • Pros
    • Realistic survival, so it's intuitive to a degree
    • Graphics make it look and feel real
    • Weather is realistic in most cases
    • Food consumption is balanced, not just food, but the dietary needs too.
    • Varying modes for customized gameplay
    • Various levels of building based on current level
    • Cons
    • Soups!!!!! I want to carry my soups with me!
    • Larger building needs too many resources
    • Stack sizes in backpack or shelves just don't hold enough. 100 feathers please.

The game is realistic, but the only tutorials you get is in story mode. So definitely play that first to get a basic understanding of mechanics.

I enjoy a more laid back play method, and the customization really allows for that. Though there is some bleed through from the story mode to plain survival with resources that are gathered, but unusable in survival (only used in story mode), so there is a bit of refinement that’s still needed.

Overall, I can spend hours immersing myself in this world and really enjoy the game and the escape it provides.

In survival genre, Green Hell is the most realistic survival game developed up to date in terms of Graphics, Survival Elements, Crafting & other mechanics.
This is not a survival game where you face zombies or other alien species. This is the game where you face real life survival in-game.

Story, Survival Mods, Building Variety, everything is top notch.

Not just a single player mode, but there is a multiplayer mode with up to 4 players. There is every survival effect present in game which you can feel in real life survival like Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue and player need to focus on these.

And every animal present in game can affect you as per its specification like Leopard can scratch you, Snake can bite you to give the poison effect. If wound is not treated well then it gets infection too. Every tiny detail is measured in this beautiful game.

For survival players, this game provides great experience within Survival Core.

    • Pros
    • Strong Story
    • Solid graphics
    • Good UI
    • Cons
    • Item recipes Don't Always Trigger/Release
    • Dangerous Creatures Arrive On A Very Predictable Schedule And Are Not Hard To Deal With

This game has a strong story and the gameplay is not simple. You start in a jungle with no idea where you are or where you are going. Like all such games, as you move along, you gain knowledge of your environment and the story. However, there is no map. You have to find it.

The graphics and audio are solid. Nothing about the story is given away in the game play. The questions aren’t really answered until the end. That is how the base game plays out.

The game does have a few issues. For context, I play games blind. I do not watch videos or consult the wiki until after my play through. The most prominent thing I experienced was recipes not triggering. I found some recipes by accident, like armor. But, I only found one armor recipe, and that as I said was an accident. AFTER finishing my play through of the base game, I consulted the Wiki and found lots of recipes I could have made (i.e. had all the materials for), but the recipe never populated in the notebook.

Dangerous creatures also appear somewhat predictably. If you kill a creature in a given area, you will not get another dangerous creature in that area for a couple of in game days. Dangerous creatures may jump scare you. But, they are fairly easily dealt with and learning how, in my opinion, is too easy.

Problems aside, this was a great game. I played the base game through as a series. Off cam, I am playing Spirits of Amazonia. This takes place in time before the events of the main game. It is on the same level of challenging as the base game.

Based on my rating of 8.0 for this game, it is clear I highly recommend it for those who want to play this survival game.

Playing it with several people is a possibility and it is really a strong point of the game. Surviving with friends is really fun. It is also more pleasant to separate tasks while playing in a group. It makes building very efficient. The game experience can differ depending on whether we play before or after the intro story event (tutorial).

    A Pure Survivalists Dream

    • Pros
    • Realism. Can't just eat cooked meat all day, must have a healthy diet, which is a refreshing challenge to the avid survivalist. Additionally, crafting never gets too crazy, which helps with immersion. As much as I enjoy building epic bases, this game keeps it real by allowing little more than leaf shelters, which let's be honest, if we were really lost in the jungle would be about all we could muster.
    • AI interaction. Wildlife and Human threats act pretty unique, not just some universal wandering NPC. Jaguars will stalk and wait for an opportunity rather than just running at you head on.
    • Medical. Very nice touch on clearing status debuffs. Instead of it giving you a symbol of what's wrong, alongside instructions on how to heal, the game encourages you to self diagnose based on appearance and symptoms, and treat accordingly.
    • Compelling Story. You will likely have many theories about what is going on, you will likely not be correct on those theories. Very conversation-invoking with a group or Twitch chat.
    • Cons
    • Steep learning curve. If you're trying to get your friend into Survival Crafting games, try another, this is designed for the hard-core veteran, not a brand new player.

Half my friends loved it, half hated it. Exceptionally well thought out game. Deserves more attention.

    • Cons
    • Building system is slow and lacks pieces.
    • Building a base becomes a pointless story is always far away

Green hell is a fresh take on jungle survival with a lot of unique features other survival games gloss over. For example, to build a clay wall you can’t simply just have clay and just build it, you must mix the mud into bricks and make a stick wall first to support the clay. Just one example of the depth green hell brings to the amazon. The enemies (animals and humans) are tough and a constant threat you don’t really reach a point where everything becomes easy because you geared up. That’s just how green hell hits, End of the game thinking you’re the top predator? Think again. You are always one sneaking jaguar away from a pine box. MUST play with friends sure it can be fun alone but its full potential lies in multiplayer. Navigation is tough for those that aren’t natural navigators take your time and don’t get lost, getting lost is a death sentence.

In my opinion, any survival player should give this game a real shot. It’s well developed and not buggy. At the time of writing, I am waiting on the building update scheduled for later in 2022. I believe it will revitalize the building system and remove some of the cons.

If you enjoy a tough survival game then Green Hell is the game for you.

The toughness in this game comes from the world and its 100 ways it is trying to kill you.
From 3 different hunger bars to snakes, ants, tigers and even tribes people everything is truly out to get you.

When you first start Green Hell you quickly learn that the information you gathered from most other survival games is of no real use to you here.
This is mainly due to a few small changes like the way you interact with objects in the world or the fact you need more than just a chunk of meat or some berries to survive since Green Hell has a bar for your calories, fat and protein.
Another big difference are the insects and wounds you can get on either your legs or arms. You need to keep an eye out on those before it gets infected. (Also get used to removing leeches every 2 minutes)

You can play in either a story mode or in a survival mode. (Both have multiplayer)
In both modes you can explore a pretty large map right away, but once you found a grappling hook the map seems to expand like 5 times.
There are lots of random buildings around the map to loot or live from a drug den to a small landing strip. and the further you move into the world the more you discover.

Building in this game is pretty normal like most other survival games. You choose something to build, put down a blueprint and then start constructing it. With how large the map is you are however not likely to stay in the same area for too long.

All in all, this is a fun game, especially with a friend but I recommend you play the tutorial even if you are a veteran in the genre. trust me it will speed up the game a lot.
