It’s no surprise to many players that No Man’s Sky and Minecraft are two of the biggest sandbox survival games, and the developers at Atypical Games, inspired by these two titles, have created their own version of a space survival adventure: Cubic Odyssey.
In Cubic Odyssey, every journey starts with a choice between four different character classes. Whether you favour the steady hand of the Miner, who uncovers extra minerals and sips energy with astonishing efficiency, or the meticulous Crafter, whose creations spring to life with built‑in improvements, your adventure is bound to feel distinct. Pilots will find themselves speeding through dogfights with tougher shields and faster progression in space battles, while Knights charge into the Red Darkness, harvesting rare resources from its corrupted foes and uncovering temple rewards as they rise in rank. Teaming up with friends and leaning on each other’s strengths promises to keep even the most seasoned explorers on their toes.

Before you set course for distant worlds, you’ll need a place to call home. Building your first base begins around a humble crafting bench. From there you refine raw ore into gleaming ingots, convert wood into fuel, and stash your haul in neatly sorted chests. As your ambitions grow, so too does your workshop: glass windows catch alien sunsets, curved staircases lend grandeur to your quarters, and defence turrets stand guard against pirates and stray meteorites.
With engines ignited, your journey to the stars begins. The galaxy map reveals light‑years to each planet, levels of Red Darkness infestation, local technology tiers and resource abundance, making route planning a breeze. For distant systems, cruise mode speeds up travel time, while warp jumps powered by crafted cells or purchased modules link you to new constellations. Warp gates stand at every hub, ensuring that no discovery is ever lost to the void.
However, interplanetary space isn’t just a quiet passage. Asteroids float by, loaded with rare elements and valuable metals. You can blast them from a distance or gear up for a closer inspection, but keep an eye on your oxygen. Each star system has a busy station where you can trade wares, recycle unwanted gear, or upgrade your vessel. Occasionally you stumble on derelict ships in need of repair, offering a fresh hull to pilot when your own vessel falls short.

Mining isn’t just about raw power. You’ll need an extractor to drill through rock efficiently, and a steady supply of batteries to keep your tools in working order. Torches stave off darkness, but for true precision, QB‑1’s terrain scans reveal hidden veins of ore and track the rarer materials you crave. When your pack is full, a trip home to unload, recycle or trade becomes a welcome pause before the next trip.
Every long journey benefits from a good partner, and in Cubic Odyssey, that role is filled by the drone QB‑1. From supplying your first extractor and workbench to guiding you through objectives, this drone keeps you one step ahead. Its modules transform it from a humble helper into a formidable ally: a stun stick damages foes, an advanced scanner uncovers distant deposits, and power management tweaks ensure QB‑1 never runs out of energy.
Trading is also an important in the game. Qbits earned through quests or selling off pirate loot unlock everything from life‑saving supplies to advanced ship parts. Town terminals and space station markets offer plenty of opportunities, with better trade levels unlocking better deals and rarer items. Regular stops at these outposts keep you well-equipped for the journeys ahead.

Finally, no odyssey is complete without the weapons. Melee enthusiasts can channel shock batons or gleaming light sabers to devastating effect, while sharpshooters have access to pistols, rifles, shotguns and long‑range sniper rigs with unique modifiers that reshape every firefight. Grenades carve paths through cover and purge Red Darkness with explosive flair, and grenade launchers turn ambushes into art. Each weapon feels alive in your hands, a perfect match for the playstyle you choose.
The game is shaping up to be a versatile playground for explorers, builders, miners, and fighters. With so many interconnected systems, decisions you make, whether it’s your class, base layout, journey destination, or weapon choice, could have a major impact.
Cubic Odyssey is set to launch as a full release on May 14, 2025, on all major platforms, including Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
