Moana-Inspired Survival RPG ‘Voyagers of Nera’ Releasing Next Week

As the game’s launch nears, here’s what to expect.

If you’ve ever wanted to survive in a setting that blends the charm of Moana with a survival experience like Enshrouded, Voyagers of Nera, developed by Treehouse Games, may be exactly what you’re looking for.

The game puts you in the role of an Echo, a long-forgotten protector of an oceanic land you’ll be struggling to endure. Called to protect the world from dangerous creatures, you’ll set out across the waves to rediscover lost treasures. But it’s not just the world you’ll be charged with protecting. You’ll need to seek out spirits hidden around the archipelago who’ll give you forgotten crafting recipes or new abilities. Doing so will ensure not only their survival, but yours as well.

voyagers of nera-multiplayer co op

You and up to nine friends can join in Voyagers of Nera, with multiplayer options including co-op or single-player. You can host your own server or rent a dedicated one from an approved partner, letting you and your friends explore together. Whether you are sailing, surfing, or swimming through crystal-clear waters, you will encounter unique biomes both on land and beneath the seas. I am a sucker for clear waters, and the waves Treehouse Games created are no different.

This survival RPG promises to not only offer different ways to traverse the ocean, but also a unique spirit system that gives you powers beyond just swinging a wooden club. Dodge, block, and parry are only part of the tools at your disposal when you need to defend yourself. The developers have added an intriguing magic system based on the spirits, making it important to find and free them as part of your journey. Spirit anchors play a key role in this system, enhancing your abilities and providing passive buffs and healing as you explore and craft.

Combat in Voyagers of Nera is designed to be varied and engaging. In addition to melee combat, you’ll be able to fight beneath the waves. Enemies telegraph their attacks, and recently overhauled stun animations provide clear feedback on your actions, letting you plan both close-quarters assaults and long-range strikes with bow and arrows.

Building and crafting are integral parts of gameplay, allowing players to take a moment to set up a home for themselves, their friends, and the spirits they’ve rescued. And of course, you’ll need a place to store all that treasure. What looks like easy, snap-on building mechanics might give players ease of use and the ability to build intricate houses. Once you’ve built someplace to call home, head back out and find the elder spirits—broken guardians that you’ll need to collect in order to finish the game’s storyline.

Voyagers of Nera is set to release in Early Access on Steam on September 16th. The developers plan to launch the game on consoles with the 1.0 release.
