At the beginning, Outriders had some issues, causing players to flock to other looter shooters which are more polished. But now those problems are mostly fixed, this can be a fun game to play with friends.
Outriders excels at the power fantasy. Guns feel amazing, abilities feel powerful, and enemies are still challenging without detracting from that powerful feeling. There are obvious overpowered builds but since its not a PVP game you are not necessarily shoehorned into them. All builds are viable although endgame content will obviously need you to lean into those niches unfortunately. Class selection occurs early on and has a massive effect on your playstyle. I perhaps would have liked a more informed choice at this point since some classes will definitely have different appeal for different people.
The story is decent, not amazing but engaging enough to push you forward. Including side content the main story and extras took me around 40 hours, which admittedly dragged a bit in the middle.
I finished it as a solo player and had a blast, if you have friends to join you I expect this would be an even more fulfilling experience as you have new options to synergise.
At the start of the game’s launch, many players hated this game due to bugs and many others things. The developers deducted the price of the game making it a discount at around the time of launch. Some people did try it and played it but give up afterwards. It was a bad experience too for me too… But after long time of fixing all the problems, the game became better.
I can’t call this game either bad nor good from my own experience, though there are quite a few reasons for that.
On the one hand, this game’s classes are all super fun to play, with their own advantages and playstyle, and some pretty flashy skills which can all easily rival each other and even what you’d call “ultimate skills” in other games.
On the other hand, there aren’t many classes in this game, and there is a clear tendency to play one class in a very specific way. I find this off-putting, mainly because once you choose your class, a new class means a new character with starter gear.
The content and story modes are both pretty good, though linear, and definitely allow one to have plenty of fun, especially if accompanied by a party. Precisely in the opposite, if one is all alone, some of the content seems absurdly difficult, and the whole point of the diversity in class playstyles has to be changed out for a play safe and try to pick them off 1 by 1.
Other than the topics mentioned thus far, it is important to state that the ratings for this game are lower than they deserve to be for one main reason: the game came out absurdly buggy, with items being deleted, levels being reset, and all that game-ending stuff. These bugs have been solved by now, but the reviews that stand still take them into consideration, and plenty of minor bugs remain in the game, though nothing worth mentioning.
In conclusion, it is a fun game and has a nice story playthrough. But once the story is over, your excitement to play the game will surely decrease significantly, so instead of an MMO, one should probably think of this game as an FPS Co-Op story game. In all due honesty, I’d recommend picking out a different game if you’re looking to play with friends, but I cannot say that this game will not grant you all a fun time.
