I thought how difficult it could be for an open world survival game made from Unity Engine, until I got into the game.
The game is a game that contains soulslike elements and is not afraid to challenge you or help you with what to do. You have to decide very well what you want to do in the game and you have to do it. If you are going somewhere and change your mind in the middle of the road and don’t have the appropriate items for that occasion, I’m sorry you’re dead. If you get into a fight with the slightest entity at the beginning of the game, I’m sorry, you’re dead. Did you decide to fight with a group of bandits before you could get used to the mechanics of the game? Yes the correct answer is you are dead! This is a situation that only addresses certain parts of it. If you know your skills and how to fight, or if you are familiar with soulslike games, it may or may not take 2-3 hours to get used to the game after a while.
Another element I want to add is the passive and active skill trees of the game. The more you travel in the game, the more you come across teachers and you get these active or passive skills from these teachers. Another thing I have to warn you about is that the map of the game is HUGE. It’s really BIG! You really need to take notes of which teachers are in which city, as if you were keeping a diary, otherwise you will lose them and spend a lot of time trying to find them again. I can say that there are not many surprises you will encounter in terms of gameplay. Coming to the story, if the story does not have a deep enough narrative to connect you, it is a system that will be shaped by your choices, or you can progress without choosing at all, the game does not force you in this regard in the form of “we have a story, the player has to play it”, this means that the player is forced to play the world and the world. I can say that it is one of the only things that pushes me to discover the game.
The game is hard, friends. I recommend those who want to buy it to do so knowing this difficulty. Generally speaking, I believe that the level and map designs of the game will make you happy. Once you get into the game, it manages to hook you very well, but it is a little below its class in terms of music. Overall, I think this game is fun and playable. In fact, I think you can have much more fun.

Outward : A Harsh Yet Rewarding Journey
    7
    • Pros
    • A vast open world
    • Highly developed survival mechanics
    • Non-linear adventure
    • An ordinary hero
    • Freedom of exploration
    • A harsh but fair world
    • The necessity to own up to all our actions
    • Cons
    • Outdated graphics
    • Clunky interface
    • Steep learning curve
    • Punishing gameplay

As many RPGs thrust us into worlds where we embody exceptional heroes, « Outward » stands apart by plunging us into the shoes of an ordinary individual, facing a ruthless world where survival is a constant struggle. In this immersive adventure, every step is a trial, every encounter an opportunity or danger. Prepare to delve into a fantastical universe where determination and cunning are your sole allies. So, hone your skills, sharpen your senses, and embark on an epic quest where survival is the greatest reward.

Regarding the storyline, at the game’s onset, our character wakes up on a beach after the ship they were aboard has wrecked. They manage to reach the town of Cierzo, where they learn they have five days to pay off a debt or risk losing their ancestral home. Incidentally, we discover that this debt stems from the mistakes of our lineage. If our ancestors acted poorly, it falls on us. So be it! We endeavor to venture forth to gather the necessary funds as quickly as possible.

« Outward » offers gameplay that emphasizes survival and exploration. Every action has consequences, and managing your resources is crucial to avoid premature death. The game world is vast and brimming with secrets to uncover. You can explore dense forests, snow-capped mountains, forgotten ruins, and dark caves, but beware of the dangers lurking in the shadows. As for combat, it’s straightforward yet punishing, with endurance management being crucial. Stealth is often the best option, and fleeing is not shameful. Not to forget, crafting plays a significant role in Outward. You can gather resources, combine them, and create tools, weapons, armor, and healing items. Even if you can find/buy recipes, you can also try mixing components yourself to learn new recipes. Trade is also essential, allowing you to acquire valuable items and resources.

Outward doesn’t shine in graphics. While the artistic direction is consistent, and the world possesses a certain wild beauty, the textures are often rough. This may not appeal to players seeking a refined visual experience, but despite this, the game has its own charm. The sound ambiance is also commendable. Sound effects and music contribute to creating an immersive and sometimes menacing atmosphere. The sounds of nature make the game world believable and alive.

Outward offers a unique and rewarding experience, but it’s worth noting some negative aspects of the game, such as its high difficulty, dated graphics, and unintuitive interfaces. Additionally, despite the vast world, it may sometimes feel empty, lacking points of interest. Finally, bugs and technical issues can affect the gaming experience.

Outward isn’t a game for everyone, but for those who appreciate it, it will remain an unforgettable gaming experience.

    • Pros
    • Nice graphics
    • No quest markers
    • Music
    • Cons
    • A little hard
    • Story

Played this one with a friend and it was a very enjoyable experience, exploring the large maps and finding secrets and having to really work together to survive. Game is hard, a part of the RPG side with missions, equipment and enemies it has the survival side, so you have to take care of eating, drinking, resting etc.

But as I said the gameplay is solid and the hours of entertainment are some of the best with a good friend.

Outward is a great open-world RPG adventure, which invites players to explore its unique world. The game has good graphics and is visually impressive with its unique and rugged fantasy world. It has elements of survival which make the game more difficult and interesting than just a regular RPG. The coop option is also great, so I would recommend the game.
