A Peaceful MMO That Takes Its Time
    6

I spent some time playing Pax Dei and it’s definitely a very different kind of MMO compared to the usual theme park style games. Instead of throwing you into constant quests and combat, the game focuses much more on exploration, crafting, and building. The world feels huge and open, and from the beginning I found myself just wandering around, gathering materials, and trying to figure out where to settle down.

One of the main things I enjoyed was the building system. Starting with a simple camp and slowly expanding it into a proper home or settlement feels really satisfying. The building tools give you a lot of freedom, and seeing player settlements appear across the world gives the game a nice community feel. It reminded me a bit of survival sandbox games where the world slowly changes as players build more structures.

Crafting is another major part of the experience. Almost everything revolves around gathering resources and turning them into tools, weapons, or building materials. I spent a good amount of time just collecting resources and experimenting with different crafting options. It’s a slower pace compared to many MMOs, but if you enjoy gathering and progression through crafting, there is something relaxing about the loop.

Exploration also plays a big role. The world is large and visually impressive, and traveling through forests, hills, and ruins can feel pretty immersive. There are moments where you stumble upon interesting locations or enemy camps that break up the slower parts of gathering and building.

That said, the slower pacing will not be for everyone. At times the game can feel a bit empty, and progression can take quite a while. If you are expecting constant action or a heavy story focus, Pax Dei might feel lacking. Some systems also still feel like they are evolving, which is understandable for a game that is still developing.

Overall, Pax Dei feels like an MMO that is trying to focus more on community, creativity, and world building rather than fast progression. I enjoyed the peaceful exploration and building aspects, but it is definitely a game that rewards patience and long sessions rather than quick bursts of action.

A beautiful world wasted by poor design

    • Pros
    • Strong social potential
    • Sandbox freedom
    • Cons
    • Non-existent endgame
    • They want to introduce monthly subscription
    • Tedious grind
    • Player base issues

As a hardcore sandbox survival gamer who went in hyped to play with friends, Pax Dei turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments in recent years. At first glance, the world looks promising but that illusion fades fast.

The core issue? Endgame is practically non-existent and horribly unbalanced. Dungeon rewards are insanely expensive to craft, yet their durability is so low that they feel more like trophies to flex in screenshots rather than gear to actually use. Instead of feeling like progression, it’s regression.

The game is also a buggy mess. I’ll never forget my clan of 20 wiping because a mob turned invincible mid-fight in dungeon. This issues, combined with unbalanced systems, have pushed players away from teamwork. Everyone is too busy hunting bugs and exploiting glitches to get ahead. That’s not good game design. That’s survival of the most broken. Im not even going to mention how almost everyone was modifying game files just to get rid of grass (to see herbs and to improve fps) or removing day/night cycle in the open world because otherwise night was too dark – surprisingly it would not work in dungeons and for some people they could perfectly see without any source of light like lanterns meanwhile others even with lanterns couldn’t see 1 meter ahead of them so they would just follow nicknames of other guildies when inside the dungeons.

Brightness and lightning in dungeons? Awful. Half the time you can’t even see what’s going on. The gameplay loop is pure monotony: endless grinding. Imagine farming metal for five days straight just to craft spears, only to trash hundreds of them just to level up weaponsmithing. It’s mind-numbing and feels like a job, not fun.

Content is painfully limited. I can name several survival games that deliver more depth, better mechanics and actual fun compared to Pax Dei. And the cherry on top? It’s buy-to-play, yet they now plan to slap a monthly subscription on it – on a game that barely scrapes 300 players at peak hours.

Honestly, the only reason I bought Pax Dei was to play with friends who wanted to try it out. Sadly, none of us are sticking around. This game could’ve been something great but as it stands, it’s a grindy, buggy mess with zero meaningful endgame.

    Pax Dei

    • Pros
    • Beautiful open world
    • Exploration system
    • Crafting and building
    • Always active online world
    • Friends can help you speed things up even if you are not active
    • It has potential
    • Cons
    • Early access improvement hasn't really changed much since launch
    • There is a point in game where you reach THE END OF IT ALL
    • Engaging/battle system is kinda stiff
    • Crafting system is extremely long
    • Solo play not recommended

So Pax Dei is a very beautiful open world game where the exploration is plentiful but the crafting system though is complicated and it takes a lot of REAL time.. but.. if you have friends to help you out when you can’t be present, it really helps.
That’s also probably one of the devs main goal to make this game a little community where people get together to create a living online game where you are not alone and you have people from the real world counting on you too.. in result that would make you log in and play because now you have a reason..
It can be one of the greatest games if the devs keep going and keep making the game better and listen to the audience..
I personally really hope this game to succeed and make a difference because I love this kind of game.
