A mysterious world, a captivating natural landscape, and a house… that walks on its own? Welcome to REKA, an adventure game where you play as a young witch apprentice determined to carve her own path in a universe inspired by Eastern European folklore. If the idea of traveling in a living house, casting spells, and helping people in a semi-open world intrigues you, grab your broomstick: the journey begins.
In REKA, you step into the shoes of a budding witch who inherits a rather unusual companion: a walking house straight out of Baba Yaga’s tales. This magical refuge follows you as you journey through enchanting landscapes, from ancient forests and remote villages to eerie swamps. Each region is filled with secrets to uncover, souls to help, and decisions to make. And yes, your choices influence the story (and personally, I love choices in games), your powers, and how others perceive you.
The gameplay blends exploration, customization, and a touch of magic. You can upgrade and personalize your house, learn new spells, interact with locals, complete quests, and evolve your character. No frantic combat here: because the game focuses on atmosphere, storytelling, aaaaaand discovery. It’s the kind of game that takes its time, like a fairy tale you enjoy by the fire (with a big cup of hot chocolate and cookies). And the house? It’s not just a gimmick, it’s your actual mobile base, and watching it change as you progress is genuinely satisfying.
Visually, REKA has a charm of its own. It’s not hyper-realistic, but the environments have a warm, poetic art style. Special shoutout to the sunsets and the way light filters through the forest. The sound design is subtle yet effective, with soft, sometimes melancholic music that fits perfectly with the magical, contemplative mood of the game.
Of course, it’s not all perfect. The house movement can occasionally feel clunky, and a few quests lack clarity. Sometimes you just wish for a bit more variety in interactions.
But in the end, REKA is a hidden gem for those who enjoy narrative-driven, peaceful, and magical experiences like me. A bittersweet adventure full of charm and quiet wonder. I was totally swept away.
In Reka you play as a girl who is learning how to be a witch from the legendary and mysterious Baba Jaga. Early in the game, you help Jaga restore her magical house on chicken legs, which will act as your mobile home. You can fully customize this house, from walls and floors to furniture and decoration. Everything is in a beautiful Slavic historical style and very nature-based. Nature is very important in this game, as it is the source of all your crafting materials, but also a power to be reckoned with because in Reka, nature is inhabited by mythical beings from Slavic folklore. As a young witch, you will have to make decisions between helping humans and these mythical beings. Sometimes you can figure out ways how to satisfy both sides, but sometimes you are forced to choose the lesser evil. And sometimes a tasty pie or a fresh baked loaf of bread will solve all your troubles 🙂 I very much enjoy this aspect of the game, where you feel like your decisions matter but there is not a lot of pressure, no split-second decisions, so the game still feels very cozy. You can spend as much time chilling in your magical hut with your animal companions as you want. There is still a lot of work to be done on the game, but so far the game looks promising and I am enjoying the available gameplay.
