Remains Early Access Preview: Stranded Alone in Outer Space

What can go wrong?

Remains is a survival crafting game set in space. The game has been out for a little over a year now in early access. Here’s what you can expect from Remains.

Story

You start the game by repairing something on your spaceship when you suddenly see a green beam of light coming from Earth. As the beam of light expands, it breaks everything apart. You survived, but your spaceship is now split into pieces and is floating around in space. You now have to scavenge what you can to build a new spaceship and figure out what happened back on Earth.
Remains is currently still in development so the story is not finished yet.

Crafting and building

You can collect the remains from your spaceship in order to craft new materials, tools, and build up a functioning spaceship. Metal scrap, rubber, and wires are floating all around and can be collected. There are meteor pieces floating among the debris as well. These need to be broken with one of the tools you can craft.

Unlocking new recipes is done at your base after you repair the main ship’s part. With these new recipes, you can start building up your spaceship and kit it out with important items like an oxygen generator. Of course, you are going to need more space in order to place everything down. You can expand your base by crafting a blueprint (this item has limited durability). Expanding your ship works similar to another survival game called Raft where you build square blocks onto your main ship in order to expand.

Survival

While there are no hostile enemies in Remains, that does not mean you are safe.

You are stranded alone in space. There are three things you have to keep an eye on. The first one of your hunger. Hunger and thirst are merged into one and you can find either food or drink in containers or catch it while it is floating past you. Oxygen is another issue you have to deal with in space. Luckily, there are oxygen tanks floating around and it should not take more than 20 minutes to build your first oxygen generator. The final one if your health. Getting hit or flying into the debris at a high enough speed will damage the player, but health will go back up after a little while.

As a bonus, I will give a tip for not flying face first into the debris and that is using the “Left Alt” key on your keyboard to spot almost all the momentum you get. This key is really handy and is not taught to you during the tutorial.

Conclusion

Remains has a solid foundation that it can work with. The building takes a little too many resources to be worthwhile. The story has to continue further since it is not yet complete, but this is normal since Remains is still in development. For an early access title, it also has minimal glitches.
