One of the Most Hardcore Survival Games I’ve Played
    8

SCUM is one of those survival games that completely destroys you during the first few hours, and honestly that’s exactly why I kept coming back to it. I went in thinking I already understood survival games after playing stuff like DayZ and Rust, but SCUM immediately humbled me. This game takes survival mechanics to another level, sometimes almost ridiculously far, but that’s also what makes it stand out.

The first thing that hit me was just how detailed everything is. You are not only managing hunger and thirst here. The game tracks stamina, injuries, body weight, metabolism, calories, and a bunch of other things most survival games completely ignore. There were moments where I spent more time trying to recover from injuries and manage supplies than actually looting, and weirdly enough that made the experience feel more immersive instead of annoying.

The atmosphere is also one of the game’s strongest points. The island constantly feels dangerous. Whether I was sneaking through military zones looking for better gear, hearing puppets nearby, or spotting another player far away, there was always this tension that kept me focused. Some of my favorite moments came from barely surviving a loot run and somehow making it back to my base overloaded with supplies while low on stamina and health.

What I also liked is how much freedom the game gives you. You can spend your time building a base, hunting animals, looting towns, driving vehicles, focusing on PvP, or simply trying to survive alone in the wilderness. No two sessions really feel the same because players themselves create a lot of the unpredictability.

At the same time, SCUM definitely has problems. The learning curve is brutal, and the amount of menus and systems can feel overwhelming at first. Combat can sometimes feel clunky, and there are still bugs and rough mechanics that can get frustrating during longer sessions.

Still, despite all the frustration, I kept finding myself going back. SCUM feels less like a normal survival game and more like a full survival simulator where every mistake matters. It’s harsh, stressful, and sometimes unfair, but when everything finally clicks, it creates some of the most intense survival moments I’ve had in the genre.

Brutal survival building prisoner simulator on a massive map
    7
    • Pros
    • The complexity of metabolism and health is unlike anything else
    • Gunplay is pretty solid, though really dependent on your connection
    • Really deep character customization based on the actions you take and things you focus on
    • Cons
    • The performance is abysmal, even on 5090+9800X3D
    • There are so many bugs, it's unconscionable that this game is 1.0+
    • Learning curve can be punishing, especially with the clunky UI
    • Official servers are infested with cheaters

So far I have a couple hundred hours of play in SCUM, and for $16 I can’t really complain too much. The game is incredibly hardcore, so for those that like games like DayZ and Rust, I think you’ll feel at home. The metabolism and health system is really unique. I never thought I’d be managing my macronutrients in a survival game haha. If you have some friends and join an active community server that polices their population, it can be a really fun experience that scales with your experience. My friends and I play on the Playground community server, which is a mix of PVP and PVE zones, that gives you the breathing room to learn the game without having to constantly watch your back, up until you’re ready to venture into the PVP zones on the map. The basebuilding is still really clunky, though enhancements are promised. There are also still an insane amount of bugs in the game that rear their head at the most inopportune moments. All-in-all if you can live through the bugs, I think you’ll find yourself in a very unique survival experience that rewards exploration, and has a very deep base building mechanic. If it’s between jumping on DayZ or SCUM these days, I find myself reaching for SCUM first.

It’s a beautiful game. The concept and gameplay are addictive. Its vast world and beautiful graphics offer a fantastic experience for both solo and co-op players. Furthermore, the weapon and equipment variety are extensive. You can play however you want. The crafting system is also excellent. It’s simply perfect. I highly recommend it to fans of the genre. Enjoy it.

    Scum: A Short Review
    7
    • Pros
    • Huge open world
    • Very detailed survival system
    • Fun base building
    • Strong crafting system
    • Intense PvP action
    • Cons
    • Steep learning curve
    • Can feel grindy
    • Bugs and glitches show up
    • Performance issues
    • Can feel empty if you play alone

Scum is a really tough survival game that puts you on an island where you have to manage almost everything, from hunger and thirst to your body temperature and even metabolism. It’s super detailed, I would say even a bit too much at times, I mean, I don’t even count macros in real life let alone in a game, but that’s exactly what makes it stand out. The world is huge, full of danger, and other players can make your life a living hell. Building bases, hunting, and exploring are all really fun once you get into it. It’s not the easiest game to learn, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll spend countless hours on it. Just don’t forget to bring a friend or two, it will make your life so much easier.

    Greatest survival simulation ever.
    9
    • Pros
    • Most in-depth metabolism of any survival game.
    • Always striving for realism.
    • Hard-core survival.
    • Quick hot fixes after patch.
    • Cons
    • Devs downgrade the severity of obstacles when community members complain it is too hard.
    • Somewhat buggy (but still not at full release).

This is the most realistic survival simulation that I have ever played. Everything they attempt they knock out of the park. Always adding something new to spice. If they could stop the namby-pamby whiners from ruining the game because they find it hard, it could be the greatest survival simulation ever.

Game is still lacking many features
    6
    • Pros
    • Weapon animations look good
    • Weapon sounds are good
    • Metabolism system is good
    • Cons
    • The map is not fun to traverse.
    • The map lacks visual variety.
    • The event system is useless, nobody plays these events.
    • The looting system is terrible. It takes too long to open containers, and more often than not, you're rewarded with a "no items found" message. It's frustrating and not fun.
    • There are massive rubber-banding issues.
    • The server browser is just bad. For example, you can't put a server on your favorite list unless you join it first.
    • The world map UI is poorly designed. You can't zoom in or out, and you can't see the direction you're looking at. You also can't place markers, which makes it hard to navigate and plan your movements.
    • Many servers are empty.

In my opinion, I find this game to be unsatisfactory at present. I’m unsure of its intended direction, as it appears to be a DayZ-like game with a more detailed metabolism system, but falls short of that mark.

I understand that the developers have expressed their desire for the game to have its own identity, but that doesn’t improve the current situation.

In terms of pros, the game excels in weapon animations and satisfying weapon sounds. The metabolism system is also implemented effectively, and the developers actively engage with the community on forums.

On the other hand, there are several cons that need to be considered. Navigating the map proves to be unenjoyable, as it lacks visual diversity. The event system holds little relevance due to limited participation. The looting system can be frustrating, with containers taking too long to open and often resulting in a disappointing “no items found” message. Additionally, frequent rubber-banding issues disrupt the gameplay experience. The server browser suffers from poor design, making it challenging to manage favorite servers. The world map UI is lacking essential features like zoom and directional information, which hinders effective navigation and planning. Lastly, the game suffers from a lot of empty servers.

In my 100 hours of gameplay, I rarely encountered other players for PvP, and the purpose of the PvE content remains unclear. There are no quests or missions, though they are apparently planning to add them. While I see the potential this game holds, I believe it will only improve significantly if modding support is introduced, assuming it ever happens.

The game’s narrative is somewhat peculiar. It presents itself as a TV show where prisoners are sent to an island to fight for survival, similar to The Hunger Games in terms of lore, but not a Battle Royale. However, the execution of this concept feels lackluster. The inclusion of robots, drones, and zombie-like creatures called “Puppets” feels disjointed and excessive. Personally, I feel that fewer elements, such as just zombies and a few human NPCs, would have sufficed.

Although this game offers some intriguing features, I would advise holding off on playing it for now. If you prefer PvE gameplay, you may find more enjoyment in games like Project Zomboid, ARK, or Conan Exiles. If PvP is your preference, DayZ or Rust might be more fitting options.

    Best looking Survival-Game
    9
    • Pros
    • Great graphics
    • Deep Metabolism
    • Huge Map
    • Great collaborations (Danny Trejo, Luis Moncada)
    • Realistic Weaponhandling
    • Photomode
    • Transparent Devs
    • Great community
    • Cons
    • Few bugs

SCUM is deeper than it looks at first sight.

Behind the graphics, it has a very deep, detailed metabolism-system. From Vitamins to gaining/losing weight, muscles. You can shape your character like you want.

Oh, the character: At start you create one (or select Danny Trejo for example, if you own the DLC), select the look, the start skills. The female models were reworked some time ago. Male models will follow.

SCUM is more fun if you play with friends. BUT even in Solo it’s great fun. When I play solo, the game feels like I AM LEGEND, a lone wolf on an Openair-Supermax.

The map is big enough. There are different zone (Mountains, Woods, Towns, Cities, etc.). If you go to the mountains, you have to prepare for the cold air and snow.

You can walk, drive, swim your way through the map with Bikes, Cars and boats.

The zombie-populations are well placed and not too many, not too few.

Content (free updates and paid DLCs) is added regularly. The Devs are communicating about the future content, development and ideas.

SCUM would be a 10, but there are still a few annoying bugs (loading issues, connection fails).

    • Pros
    • Many guns are available for you to choose from
    • There are all kinds of vehicles & boats
    • Rewarding skill system
    • You can craft anything
    • Cons
    • It takes time to learn the game for new players
    • Survival at times becomes difficult, which demotivates
    • I definitely saw some bugs

I came across this game when I was a streamer. I normally do not play such games as I mainly play Singleplayer games, but I decided to check it out for at least 4-5 hours.
One thing I’ve noticed is that there are a lot of guns to choose from as you progress through the game. This game tests your PvP shooting abilities for sure!
I’ve killed many players. You have to be very vigilant in the game and keep planning and crafting on the go.

This game is similar to DayZ. I wish more of the things from Scum could be found in DayZ and vice-versa. This is proof that not all games are perfect!

    7/10

If you are planning to play Scum, I suggest checking out a lot of gameplay videos on YouTube or watching the streamers play it.
This game is extremely hardcore. Many experienced players are so good at it and they’ll have no mercy on you.

    • Pros
    • Regular updates
    • Big content updates
    • VERY in touch with the playerbase
    • PVP or PVE
    • Alternative to DayZ
    • Massive crafting system (cant stress this enough)
    • Most Cons are only temporary and will be patched out with content
    • Boats
    • Cars
    • Planes
    • Bikes
    • Giant robots
    • Puppets(ZOMBIES)
    • Many guns
    • Hardcore survival
    • Built in safe zone feature
    • Interesting spawn system
    • Skill Progression
    • Cons
    • Lack of in depth base building elements ( expected in future)
    • Vehicle issues (ongoing work)
    • General Bugs Due to Early Access
    • Skill progression

Scum is a DayZ-like game with a wider focus on PVP the premise of prisoners on a murder TV show kind of breeds that mentality. That being said there are plenty of PVE opportunities due to the fact Scum has a build in Safe zone system any server can add safe zones to the map with. Using these you can safely trade with players and socialize. Scum has an interesting take on base building allowing you to either convert an existing building or free build something new tho limited at this time it’s expected to have much more content in the future (Early Access)

Skill progression is listed in both pros and cons intentionally. At current, the way it works promotes snowballing and discourages new players on a server from pvping. Here’s why: If you are fresh to a server, let’s say you put some of your points into shooting handguns but you don’t find one you find something else like a rifle, Your skill with a said weapon will be so low you can line it up perfectly and still miss due to the skill mechanics. Now that being said even if you found the right weapon if someone is a regular on that server and they get into PVP with you they almost certainly will win due to higher Gun skill levels allowing them to land shots you cannot due to your poor weapon skill. I personally believe some changes will be made over the course of scums life to lessen this effect. All in all, it is still a Pro as most PVP-based survival games don’t offer something like this.

At the time of writing, I have redownloaded the game to enjoy the Wings of Fury Update I will update the review after I get a good idea of the improvements.

All in all, I would recommend Scum to anyone who likes DayZ, Escape from Tarkov or Rust. Also to anyone who likes hardcore PVP.
