Survival: Fountain of Youth is a great survival game that lets you explore a mysterious, uncharted islands in search of the Fountain of Youth. From the start it will get you hooked with beautiful environments, mysterious story bits and a little bit of real danger. The visuals are bright and detailed, exploration feels rewarding and the atmosphere is just right, on occasion peaceful and on occasion tense.
There are quite a lot of things I like about this game, and some of it is the way they managed to balance survival and exploration. As usual, you have to manage hunger, thirst, injuries and shelter but somehow it doesn’t feel overwhelming. There’s a sense of meaningful progression as you gather resources, craft tools and slowly uncover more of the islands. The crafting system is deep but not too complicated and finding new tools and gear is satisfying.
Another great part of the game is the story. Usually, when you have good survival aspect the story is not that much good, but with this game it’s not just about surviving – there’s a great mystery to uncover with old ruins, ancient clues and journal entries scattered around the island. It gives you a reason to keep going beyond just surviving.
That being said there are a few things that could be better. Inventory management can get a bit frustrating at times especially when you’re carrying a lot of items. Some parts of the game like navigating or finding specific resources can feel a bit grindy too, but this happens in a lot of games. But one thing that gets me the most is durability of tools, I always disliked this mechanic but in here it seems like the tools are always breaking.
All in all, Fountain of Youth is a solid survival game with a unique setting and a cool story twist. If you enjoy survival games that aren’t just about building and crafting but also have a great story to uncover this one might be worth checking out. Just be prepared for some trial and error as you learn the ropes. So go ahead and try your luck as a 16th century explorer.
Survival: Fountain of Youth has a unique take on a survival mechanic, where a player doesn’t actually craft the spear. They don’t tink-tink-tink. They spend time doing it, thus time fast forwards while crafting most things. This saves overall time crafting and building, but does take some of the “fun” out of seeing your project come to life while hammering away at the item.
The principal story happens around 5 sets of islands. Central and then the 4 corners, up, down, left right. With sunken ships, underwater caves, caverns and temples and of course, sharks. There has to be sharks. The different animals that want to take a chunk out of you might as well be part of the navy seals. Land, Sea and Air. You will have a plethora of animals to hunt and survive. Including a couple of mighty Caimans and large buffaloes.
If island hopping, deep-sea free diving, temple hunting and all the usual suspects of a survival game is what you are looking for, Survival: Fountain of Youth is a sure winner. Find out the fate of Ponce de Leon.
