The highrise tries to stand out by offering a survival experience set in a limited but thematic area – much like Snowpiercer with its train, except here it’s about surviving inside a skyscraper. On paper, the idea of being trapped and forced to adapt within a vertical world is pretty unique. Unfortunately, the execution doesn’t live up to the promise, with shallow mechanics and lackluster design holding it back. What could have been a fresh take on the genre ends up feeling unfinished and forgettable.
In the Highrise you get dropped you into a crumbling skyscraper in the middle of a disaster zone, and you need to fight your way in order to survive. Instead of an open world, you’re stuck in a vertical maze and the goal is simple—climb, survive and find out what’s going on. The setting is pretty unique which alone makes it stand out, and each floor is its own little story filled with danger and surprises.
One of the things I liked about The Highrise is the atmosphere this game has. It’s pretty tense, claustrophobic and full of little details that make the building feel alive… or maybe just dying. The lighting, sound design and overall mood is something different, it will pull you in and at the same time keep you on the edge of your seat. Also the exploration is fun and you never know what’s on the next floor.
The survival mechanics are solid too. You have to manage hunger, thirst, injuries which adds depth without being a chore. Crafting and looting is satisfying and every item you find feels useful. There’s also a bit of a mystery going on which gives you a reason to keep climbing besides just staying alive.
But as it is the case with most games, this one also is not perfect. Some of the combat feels a bit stiff and monsters can be really good or complete miss. It also takes a bit of trial and error to figure things out in the early game, which could be frustrating for new players. Also, the game has a lot of issues with breaking and stuttering, which can make it unplayable at times. And one particular issue I had that was very frustrating is that the game crashed, and I lost my save, which made me lose a lot of time and progress.
But despite the issues, The Highrise is a cool survival game with a great setting and atmosphere. If you like tense story driven survival games and want something different from the usual open world setup, then this one might be worth checking out. Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention it is also a coop, so it will be even more fun!
