The Legend of Khiimori Rides into Early Access

Train, breed, bond, and survive with horses.

I’m a sucker for open world exploration and just getting out there and looking around. Not too much hand holding, just enough direction to get you started. So, it goes without saying I’m looking forward to this title. Though, I am all out of horse feed and salt licks. But I digress, let’s take a look at what’s in store for release.

Set in the vast steppe of 13th century Mongolia, The Legend of Khiimori puts players in the saddle as a Yam courier rider crossing an untamed, historically inspired world. It doesn’t cast you as a conqueror or warlord. Instead, it centers on the demanding life of a messenger carrying goods, knowledge, and fragile cargo across great distances.

The landscape draws from real geography and nomadic culture. Grasslands roll toward distant mountains. Rivers cut through wide valleys. Deserts push endurance to its limit. Travel isn’t instant, and there aren’t map icons guiding every step. You’ll rely on observation and memory. Camps, ruins, sacred sites, and trade paths quietly shape the journey. It’s a world that rewards players with a strong sense of direction.

At the heart of the experience are the horses. They aren’t just mounts. They’re living partners with, temperament, hunger, and trust. Training, breeding, and daily care drive the games progression. Over time, your stable grows into a lineup of specialized steeds suited for different climates and challenges. Each one carries inherited traits that affect performance and survival.

The survival systems will support immersion without becoming overwhelming. Food, warmth, exhaustion, and gear condition all matter. Foraging and hunting provide materials for tonics and supplies. Crafting extends to archery tools, including specialized arrows and powder pouches used for defense and gathering. Archery reflects Mongolian tradition and works as both weapon and utility. A recent update adds another layer to traversal. Horses can now swim. Swimming drains stamina fast however. Also, players might find some cargo won’t survive getting wet. Well trained horses with higher stamina can swim farther, which may open paths to islands holding collectibles or rewards. Speaking of which, breeding has also been improved. Developers updated interface clearly shows inherited traits and genetic factors, including coat color genes. It’s easier to understand how future generations might turn out. Stronger bloodlines mean better endurance, resilience, and adaptability. Progress feels steady and long term.

When can we expect all this? Soon. Early Access launches on March 3, 2026. It’s the start of development in public, however, and not the final version. More systems, content, and refinements are planned, could be shaped in part by community feedback. The developers have a open Trello board, so it your interested, check out their roadmap.

Overall, players can expect a grounded open world shaped by distance, climate, and authenticity. Travel will demand foresight, horses will need care, and deliveries won’t be handed to you. A true survival adventure awaits. And that’s The Legend of Khiimori Early Access in a nutshell, with more to come on Steam.
