Idea is amazing, gameplay is not fun

    • Pros
    • Concept *sounds* really cool
    • The graphics and theme are unique
    • Nice soundtrack and sound effects
    • Cons
    • Unfinished and abandoned
    • Very frustrating and boring game mechanics
    • Buggy
    • Hard to learn and understand what the game wants

I really like the *concept* of this game… but the execution doesn’t live up to it’s full potential. It’s unfinished, it’s been abandoned, and so many things about it are frustrating. For what could have been a very cool mix of a spooky but cozy kind of game, it’s disappointing. The gameplay is very frustrating, confusing and unaccessible for certain people. It has a unique artstyle and theme, so if you have some patience you could definitely find enjoyment and interest in it!

The Serpent Rogue: A Short Review

    • Pros
    • Interesting alchemy system
    • Relaxing exploration
    • Unique world style
    • Cozy gameplay
    • Nice sound effects
    • Cons
    • Tutorial is very light
    • Can feel confusing
    • UI can be clunky
    • Camera can be annoying
    • Some areas feel empty

I spent some time with The Serpent Rogue and for me it was a pretty interesting mix of calm exploring and strange little challenges. I liked messing around with the alchemy system even though it took me a bit to understand what I was doing. The world is realy cool, it has this quiet and eerie feeling that made me want to look around more even when I had no idea where I was heading. There were moments where I felt a bit lost but in a weird way that became part of the charm because the game lets you figure things out on your own. Some parts can feel slow or confusing but I still enjoyed trying new potions and seeing what kind of creatures I could work with. All in all it is a nice little game worth trying.

This game has so much potential. The crafting system is fun and artstyle/graphic design is lovely. Actually it’s something like a cross between a crafting and an adventure game, requiring you to explore and understand the world. It encourages you to try and break its system or find interesting solutions to problems. The main loop of the game made me feel like i was playing Animal Crossing for the first time again – Going out, collecting loot with some distractions in the middle, getting back, crafting with what i got, waiting for more materials. However, the game is essentially just about crafting. Which I would theoretically be happy with. There is a central, rogue-like element in that the places you go to collect crafting materials are on a timer. Once the timer is up, the landscape and what is available changes. So you’re going back to the same area and having to re-explore it every time. This wouldn’t be so bad if you dying didn’t leave all your things where you died. You die a lot in the beginning of this game.Unfortunately, so many mechanics go unused, or are largely not available until near the end of the game.

The collection, recipe and crafting system is simple and fun, you actually feel like you’re learning things as you go.
The combat system is not perfect, definitely rough to get into for the first time but the game manages to make it work. A simple hit and run strategy mixed with throwing damage potions at scarier things is what you will spend most of your encounters on. There’s no dodge mechanic yet, but it would be a really nice addon. The stamina bar drains fast, but once you start cooking foods 1-2 hours in, it stops being a problem and survival becomes easier. I hope the game will expand over time, new areas, mechanics, materials etc, because it is a bit small and empty even with the amount of materials and recipes in it

I recommend everyone to try it out if it looks interesting to you. Even if its to experience the alchemy system in general, the idea of transforming things around you, or if you just want to tame an army of chickens and relive the Zelda reference from the other POV. It’s a fun idea honestly.

A good idea ruined by a bad game
    4
    • Pros
    • A good concept where the main focus is alchemy and scavenging resources to craft potions, foods etc
    • You can tame animals
    • Good art style
    • Cons
    • Non-existent tutorial or info on how to play the game
    • The gameplay loop is a grind.
    • To run, you need stamina. But maximum stamina constantly decreases for health regeneration. This happens so fast that your stamina will be basically 0 most of the time.
    • Food lets you regain stamina, except the stamina regain is so low that by the time you find food, your stamina is 0 again. So almost no progress can be made.
    • The corruption build up so fast that you can barely explore a map, let alone find the necessary ingredients.

Never have I played a game where the game just gave up right after the beginning cutscene. You play as a warden who has the duty to protect the cycle and stop the corruption. The corruption is spreading to animals like bird, chicken, dogs to even human, turning them into creature of violence. You start with the task of investigating the different locations and curing/defeating the corrupted creatures to progress.

So you start from a hub area with a house to craft potions, cook foods, research materials, rest and even take requests to earn some coins. And you progress to the next area to start your investigation.

And just like that, that’s where the game suddenly decides to go radio silence on what to do next. You go to the next area and start scavenging some resources. You realize there is an inventory limit. You get into simple combat and you realize you are losing both health and max stamina as your stamina is used for miniscule health regeneration. You get an axe and then realize that there are durability for weapons and it goes down so fast. You decide to go back to place items in the box. But by the time you return, the corruption level reaches 100% and you get injured by corruption storm. So you leave and enter again. The entire area is reset and you again fill your bag with items with no knowledge on recipes on how to cook or craft using the items.

You find a boss and the game tells you to either kill it or cure it. Except you don’t know how to cure it as the game never told you. You don’t know how to kill it either with your 0 stamina meter as such you can only attack once with doing 3 damage per hit with a weapon.

The premise of the game is good with focus on alchemy and even shape shifting to different animals. But at the same time, the game feels abandoned within the first hour. As such, the game is not at a level where I can recommend playing it.

The Serpent Rogue: The Adventures of a Botanist
    7
    • Pros
    • The highly comprehensive crafting system
    • The corruption concept that makes enemies stylish
    • Many good ideas and things to discover
    • A game that doesn't hold your hand at all
    • Good graphics and dynamic music
    • Cons
    • The overly abrupt game introduction
    • The frustration it can occasionally generate
    • The lack of thorough explanations for various game aspects

A dark universe, a mysterious protagonist, and gameplay centered around crafting and exploration – that’s what awaits us in the world of “The Serpent Rogue.” From the first minutes, the player is immersed in a hostile world where corruption seems to have taken control of everything. The player’s goal is simple: combat this corruption using the crafting knowledge of our hero.

The game’s principle involves wandering through hostile zones without any equipment. The player then collects items during exploration, which must be studied. Once an object has been studied enough times, it can be used as an ingredient to create potions, weapons, tools, etc. While this explanation is clear, in the game, things are much more confusing. The tutorial is limited, and players are quickly thrown into the world of The Serpent Rogue without much guidance. Deaths are frequent, and frustration accompanies each one because if you die, all the contents of your bag drop at the location of your defeat. You can recover it on subsequent exploration, but if you die again before retrieving it, all the bag’s contents disappear for good, akin to Dark Souls.

Regarding combat, it’s extremely slow: you strike, retreat, come back – a somewhat cowardly technique, but almost necessary because your character doesn’t attack quickly. Equipment comes later, but it won’t change your gameplay much; a sword, an axe, a torch – not much difference. These weapons can be found on human (or undead) corpses or crafted in your central hub.

Using potions isn’t necessarily more convenient; the long-range aiming system is not very pleasant, and you rely on auto-targeting, which is a savior. Navigating through menus is no easy task; you’ll frequently need to empty your bag since you only have twenty weight slots available, and weapons and equipment quickly take up space.

Graphically, the game is attractive; the art direction is good, and whether in mobile or docked mode, the game suffers very little from aliasing. However, occasional slowdowns occur, rarely severe but translated by a slight freeze, for example, when entering a new area.

The sound ambiance is also good, lacking conventional music, mainly a soundscape that is deep and resonant, fitting well into these empty and corrupted environments.

The Serpent Rogue has the knack for shaking up the player, and that’s a good thing. A successful expedition can be very rewarding, but if you lose all your findings, it can be potentially frustrating. One thing seems certain: if you enjoy crafting and exploration, The Serpent Rogue has some compelling offerings.
