Wildmender is a calm and cozy survival game that focuses more on healing the world than fighting it. Bringing life back to a dry desert by planting trees, restoring water, and watching the environment slowly change feels genuinely rewarding. It’s not a fast or intense game, but that’s part of its charm. While the gameplay loop can get repetitive over time and some systems feel a bit simple, the overall experience is relaxing and satisfying if you enjoy slower, nature-focused games.
This game is gorgeous and so unique! The colours and softness of the artstyle is so perfect. The gardening and farming aspect is really different considering you’re in a desert/oasis atmosphere! It ties into the survival aspect really well. The base building allows free movement and you can be very creative with it! The decorations fit the vibe super well and give the game a really cozy and satisfying feel when you build your base!
Exploration is really fun and it’s so exciting to explore the world! You need to keep an eye on hunger and thirst, it feels really nice when you find just the plant you need to help you. Collecting resources and upgrading is challenging but not at all unfair! You really feel like the world is open for you to live in!
The story is mystical and magical, it gives a really fresh spin to a survival/farming sim! Which is such a perfect blend of genres together already! The characters are adorable and I love the customization! The soundtrack completely adds to the cozy, relaxing magical vibe of the game, it really makes the scenery come alive!
I do really wish the game had more critters around to make the world feel even more alive. I could see a lot more potential with this! They update the game a lot and always add new things, so I hope to see it grow even more!
For a cozier style of game, it’s really fun to have a 3D version of combat! I especially love any magic/ranged based attacks. I would love to see the combat explored upon more with a bigger feeling of variety, weapons, equipment and movement! More fun ways to travel around the world such as flying, or surfing through the sand would be really fun!
This is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the delight of responsive creative gameplay and survival exploration. Plant your seeds and nurture your garden, guiding the process but accepting that you don’t necessarily control it! After all, nature can’t really be tamed. I played this both in early access and again after launch, and was delighted by the heart and soul that the creator has poured into the game.
I was so impressed with the design, as there is a very organic feeling to how the various plants and buildings interact with each other. Some creative building and gardening/farming games have a feeling that you’re in a sim locked to a grid. This isn’t the case with Wildmender. Results have that unpredictable component which keeps me coming back. The play through is very repeatable thanks to the randomness of gardening, however because of the story-gated progression I tend to want to wait a long time in between restarts.
The combat is fun and a fairly meaningful part of the game as you have to defeat enemies to progress. Each interaction has fairly simple combat mechanics but encounters are still tough enough that you need to pay attention. Nothing feels insurmountable, however, although a few situations require thinking through rather than brute force combat. Being careless or overconfident in your exploration can be extremely punishing, thirst and hunger sneaking up on you and not much in the way of relief outside of your gardens. So make sure to be prepared and plan ahead.
Word of warning. Some map seeds when you try a custom play through might be broken and unfinishable. This isn’t the case for the default starting map seed. And I have only had it happen once. It would be good if there was an option to bypass game progression gating in these situations.
