The game is engaging. And, it is challenging. It is not supposed to be the Long Dark, or Green Hell, or any other survival type game. And, it very much isn’t. I am very glad for that. It’s also pretty clear they got a lot of influence from them. But, it has problems. The Steam blurb says this the “ultimate survival experience,” with a “unique sanity system.” And, I did not really find that to be true about this game. The UI is fairly standard. The injuries and treatments are pretty standard. Injuries and illnesses affect your sanity. Again, pretty standard. There is a sanity component. But, it isn’t explained. It’s just kind of sprung on you in pieces. So, you don’t really know how it works or what to do about it.
Survival Mode:
I played about 15 hours of survival mode. And, in Survival Mode, there are 4 scenario options you can choose from, but the game doesn’t explain them well. The map is small. I believe it is smaller than any zone in The Long Dark. But, wherever you start, sections of it are blocked off to you unless/until you get higher level tools. (Again, progress not explained.)
I play with a controller due to a nerve issue in my left arm. And, with the controller plugged in, it still shows the mouse on the screen. Unless you move the mouse. Then it disappears. Once it disappears, if you ever need to use it, the mouse never appears on the screen. And, there are situations where you still need the mouse. The control functions are inconsistent. It is normal to hit the “use” button (could be either A or X) before the game does whatever it is supposed to do. Many times when trying to use an inventory item, nothing happens. Many other functions often require you to hit the action button twice for anything to happen.
About 5 or 6 hours in, the inventory item display quit working. So, I could not tell what an item is or does. There is a button you can hit that is supposed to enable that…but it doesn’t. There are challenges available in the game. But, when you go to accept one, it says you can only have one challenge open at a time…even if one is not listed as active. Which can also happen if nothing is listed in the quests, side quests, or challenges.
Story Mode:
I am now playing Story Mode (about 6 hours in). The control issues and functionality problems are there, too. Story mode is very linear and scripted. While you can wander around and see what’s what, it is not open world. If you get out of sync with the progression, it is very difficult to get back to the right place and pick it back up again.
Final thoughts:
I like the game. It has a lot going for it. AND! When I posted some of this in their Discord, I got a relatively quick response. Some of it they already knew about, some they didn’t. But, they quickly indicated they are working on them. Which is fantastic.
So, I do sort of recommend this game…with a LOT of caveats. But, if you do decide to get it, at least buy it at a STEEP discount. Overall, I recommend avoiding it for now.
Winter Survival is a “chilling” game that puts players into a harsh, unforgiving environment where every decision could mean life or death. It offers an intence survival experience set in the heart of a brutal winter landscape, and give you the intense feeling of survival .
Winter Survival is a test of resource management and strategic planning. It places you in a snow-covered wilderness where you must gather resources, build shelters, and fend off the cold while managing your hunger, thirst, and fatigue. The attention to detail in the environment is awesome!!
The graphics really point out how the frozen world looks like, from the frost-covered trees to the snowflakes, creating an immersive experience that pulls you into its icy grip.
One of the standout features is the dynamic weather system. Blizzards can strike without warning, drastically reducing visibility and making travel difficult.
This unpredictability forces you to constantly adapt your strategy, adding a layer of realism and urgency.
The game’s crafting system allows you to create various tools and equipment essential for survival.
However, crafting requires planning and resource gathering, which can be a challenge.
The game’s difficulty is real!!
The survival mechanics are unforgiving, with mistakes often leading to death.
This level of difficulty can be frustrating especially for new gamers to the world of survival.
The sound design pairs the visuals perfectly.
The crunch of snow underfoot, the howling wind, and the occasional distant howl of wildlife all contribute to the immersive experience.
However, the game’s slow, methodical pace might not appeal to everyone.
If you prefer fast-paced action, this game might not be for you.
In terms of narrative, “Winter Survival” focuses more on the experience rather than a structured storyline.
This approach works well for a survival game, because it allows you to create your own unique story though the struggle.
Overall, “Winter Survival” is a demanding game that gamers that love survival struggle will love this one for sure.
Its attention to detail and immersive environment create a captivating experience, though it may test your patience and perseverance.
If you’re up for a game that will push you to your limits, this one is worth checking out.
Frozen lands, unforgiving nature, and a constant struggle for survival… does this intrigue you? Welcome to a world where each day could be your last! Oh, I forgot to mention that all of this doesn’t come without its share of bugs unfortunately. So, if you’re ready, bundle up in your warmest clothes, muster your courage, and embrace your sense of adventure and survival, as we dive into the icy universe of Winter Survival!
As for the game’s story, Winter Survival puts you in the shoes of an ill-prepared protagonist stranded in a winter desert after a disastrous journey. Isolated in a wild and ruthless environment, our hero must battle not only the extreme elements but also the devastating effects of loneliness and despair. Each day is a new battle for survival, where hunger, thirst, and extreme cold threaten to end their journey. As you progress, players uncover fragments of the character’s story through notes left by previous survivors and memories that gradually reveal what led them into this perilous situation.
In terms of gameplay, the game stands out with its realistic and demanding survival mechanics, forcing players to manage physical and mental health, hunger, thirst, and body temperature. Resource management is crucial, requiring finding and rationing food and water while avoiding predators and freezing temperatures. Building shelters, lighting fires, and crafting warm clothing are essential but require specific tools and skills. The game is ruthlessly difficult, confronting players from the start with urgent challenges like finding drinkable water and drying their clothes, adding a realistic tension that is the core appeal of Winter Survival.
One of the game’s unique mechanics is the mental health system. Each day spent in this hostile environment affects your character, with psychological consequences manifested by increasingly disturbing hallucinations. You might see non-existent rocks blocking your path or imaginary creatures appearing out of nowhere, making every step uncertain and every decision even more crucial.
Winter Survival’s graphics are impressive and immersive. The game successfully captures the cold and desolate beauty of the winter desert with meticulous detail. Snowy landscapes, frozen forests, and majestic mountains are rendered realistically, enhancing the oppressive and isolating atmosphere of the game. Lighting and shadow effects add depth, making nights particularly terrifying and icy days even more realistic.
Unfortunately, Winter Survival is not without bugs. There are collision issues where your character can get stuck in terrain or pass through objects. Visual glitches are also common, with textures failing to load properly or environmental elements suddenly disappearing. These bugs can be particularly frustrating when they occur in the midst of critical survival situations, making the game even more challenging than it already is. Additionally, there are occasional save issues, posing a risk of losing progress after extended play sessions. Given the game is in Early Access, regular updates are deployed to address these issues, but they can seriously impact the gaming experience.
Winter Survival is not a bad survival game. However, its extreme difficulty and bugs can be frustrating, compounded by an incomplete story that unfolds gradually through major updates. Despite this, the game has tremendous potential. With some adjustments, it could truly stand out. If you enjoy challenges and are willing to face a wintry world, Winter Survival is worth a look.
Honestly, my expectations were very high for Winter Survival. When I saw that it was compared to productions such as The Long Dark and Forest series, I dreamed of a game with a long play time. I got access to the game before its release and was really disappointed. At least before the release date, I had a very problematic game. While writing this review, these problems have probably been solved with minor updates, but the game I experienced was definitely a hotbed of bugs.
Saving the game is one thing, doing missions is another. It’s frustrating when you go through a lot of trouble only to see your hard-earned items disappear due to a ridiculous game crash. The registration system in the game is also problematic. For example, you went to bed and saved the game, but for some reason the game crashed. When you log in again, you see that the game was saved, but everything you did before saving is gone. So this is not something that happened to me even once or twice. It’s a mistake that keeps repeating itself throughout my playing time.
It will definitely be better. It’s just at the beginning. It would be a bit ridiculous to reach definitive conclusions during the Early Access period. However, my advice is to wait a little longer before purchasing the game. I think it will be in a better position if it receives enough updates. For this reason, I want to give the game some time, and I recommend it to you too. If you like the genre, you can take a look.
