Crimson Desert Adds Difficulty Modes, New Pets, and Control Presets

Hard difficulty includes new combat moves for bosses.

Regardless of where you stand with Crimson Desert, you have to admit, it does a lot right, in terms of gameplay. And it does look stunning. With that in mind, it looks like the devs over at Pearl Abyss, don’t plan to rest on their laurels either.

It’s latest update introduces among other things, difficulty settings that change how combat plays out. Players can now choose between Easy, Normal, and Hard modes, with each option adjusting more than adjusting enemy health. Easy reduces incoming damage, slows opponents, and widens the timing windows for defensive actions, making encounters more forgiving overall. Hard mode moves in the opposite direction, tightening parry and dodge timing while increasing enemy aggression and adding new boss behaviors that force quicker reactions. Some encounters also include expanded attack patterns, meaning experienced players will need to adapt instead of relying on what they already know. Smaller details, like delayed food effects, that adds tactical planning in tougher fights.

Then there’s the control updates which aim to address long standing issues with both keyboard and controller setups. A preset system has been added, letting players switch between layouts without rebinding every key. At the same time, customization has been expanded for those who prefer fine tuning, especially on keyboard and mouse. Small quality of life changes, such as combining certain inputs or improving how aiming interacts with nearby objects, help reduce awkward transitions during combat and exploration, making the overall control feel more consistent.

The update also expands the pet system in ways that go beyond cosmetics. New birds can be encountered throughout the world, and interacting with them involves a trust system tied to feeding and placing specific items. Cats receive additional variations, while existing companions gain more functionality through a new equipment slot that allows them to take on different roles. There’s also more flexibility in how players connect with their animals, including the ability to rename them. Some unintended behaviors, like cats lingering on a character’s shoulder, have been adjusted but not removed, instead becoming optional features. These changes help pets feel more integrated into exploration and everyday gameplay.

Beyond these areas, the update touches nearly every part of Crimson Desert in some way. Visual improvements enhance distant environments and character detail, while technical optimizations aim to reduce instability issues. Systems tied to housing, inventory, and crafting have been refined to cut down on repetitive management, letting players access stored materials more naturally. Combat balance has been revisited, smoothing out enemy behavior and removing some frustrating mechanics. There are also ongoing adjustments to UI clarity and accessibility, alongside fixes for progression issues and bugs, all contributing to a more stable and cohesive experience.

There are a host of other updates and changes, but these are the big-ticket items. For the full list of changes, check out their website. Now, where’s that mech suit at?
