The Farm 51 has surprised players with an Early Access release of Chernobylite 2 and shared new details about dynamic factions, co-op, the planewalking ability, and more in-depth building mechanics compared to their first game.
Base building has undergone a significant evolution in the sequel. Unlike the first game, where players built and customized their shelters only to lose access after the campaign, the sequel ensures that the base remains a key feature even after the main story concludes. Players will have greater freedom to construct and organize their shelters, designing entire rooms and structures to create a more immersive and functional home base. However, rather than multiple small bases spread across the world, the game will focus on a single, feature-packed headquarters that serves as a central hub. This decision was made to enhance immersion while ensuring that base management remains meaningful without unnecessary travel.
Factions play a major role in shaping the game world. Each faction has its own settlements and areas of influence, which shift over time based on player actions. Rather than choosing a single faction to align with, players can work with multiple groups, balancing alliances and rivalries. Companions will also belong to factions, but their personal loyalties and motivations may not always align with their group’s goals, adding another layer of complexity to decision-making.
While the game focuses on a single-player experience, players will have the opportunity to join friends in select missions and certain multiplayer activities integrated into the main campaign. The developers are cautious about overpromising, noting that some technical constraints may still shape the final co-op experience.
In addition to these major gameplay systems, Chernobylite 2 introduces “planewalking,” allowing players to shift between different character builds without permanently locking into one playstyle. With melee combat, firearms, and even peaceful resolution options available, the game seeks to offer extensive freedom in how players approach each challenge.
The developers have decided to release the game earlier than anticipated by launching it in Early Access, as stated on the Steam forum:
“Alright, I think I can say this officially now. Once again, you’ve managed to convince us, and we’re going to run through Early Access with you one more time to make sure that everything we’re doing (especially FPP) is something you truly enjoy and is of the right quality.”
Chernobylite 2 will launch into Early Access on March 6, 2025.
