Funcom has released Patch 1.3.20.0 for Dune: Awakening, introducing a major shift in how PvP and PvE are handled across its official Worlds. The update also sets the stage for self hosted servers, though that feature is still in development and will arrive later.
PvP zones in Hagga Basin have now been disabled, while the Deep Desert has been split into two distinct instances. One is built entirely around PvE, offering a survival experience without any player combat. The other keeps the familiar PvP structure, where conflict remains open and resource gains are higher to reflect the added risk. Mining and spice harvesting yields in PvP areas have been increased, giving players a clearer reason to engage with that side of the game.
According to Funcom, a large majority of the player base has focused on PvE, and the previous overlap between PvE and PvP created friction, especially in the Deep Desert. The new structure allows players to explore, gather, and complete objectives without constant pressure from other players, while still preserving a dedicated space for those who want competitive encounters.
Chapter 3 introduced repeatable systems such as Specializations, updated Landsraad Missions, revised Faction Rank progression, and scalable Testing Stations. These additions expanded PvE progression and reduced the need to rely on PvP for advancement.
Self hosted servers remain one of the more anticipated features. Funcom says the first version will be released as an experimental feature, with limited customization options at launch. Players will be able to adjust settings such as resource rates, building limits, and durability, with more flexibility planned over time.
The studio has also been clear that setting up these servers will require some technical work in the beginning. The initial version is expected to rely on Windows Pro with Hyper V and a virtual machine setup, which may limit accessibility for some players. Improvements to simplify the process are planned, though no specific timeline has been confirmed.
You will need at least 20 GB of RAM, along with an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 processor, and 100 GB of SSD storage. With this setup, you will be able to comfortably run a server for up to 4 players.
It looks like Dune: Awakening is heading toward a more flexible game structure, where players can choose how they want to survive on Arrakis. Are you planning to return to the game or give it a chance after the new changes?
