Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days Launches Its Biggest ‘Spill Zone’ Update Yet

Zombies, toxic fumes, and explosions will try to stop you at every turn.

Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days, a side-scrolling, devilishly fun survival game developed by PikPok, adds a new endgame scenario, Spill Way. If fighting zombies and surviving the horde while scavenging for supplies was not challenging enough, this new escape plan will put your skills to the test.

The scenario starts explosively. During scavenging, a loud explosion can be heard in the background, and a flying canister nearly crushes you. From there, you quickly learn that the chemical plant’s eruption may be key to your survival. A brief encounter with a foreman at the spillway hints that escaping will not be as simple as sliding down a sewage pipe. I think the new chemical plant and surrounding areas fit seamlessly with Texas’s deep history of oil, making the spillway feel like a believable addition to the game world.

Players will also explore a new CDC Field Station, scavenging for anything useful. Initially, protective gear is missing, adding tension and urgency. Once found, the mystery of the spillway deepens. At this point, I found myself wishing the game sprinkled lore more evenly throughout the locations. Spending so much time moving between areas, it would be great to discover bits of story along the way to heighten the mystique of the escape plans. While lore does exist, it mostly only appears once you are actively on an escape plan.

Into the dead our darkest days spill way characters

As you progress along the Spill Way, you encounter colorful characters, some of whom you might not expect to be trying to survive. This led to a funny moment during my own playthrough when I accidentally shot a fellow survivor while clearing an area. That is the beauty of this game, tension is high, and mistakes happen.

Overall, the Spill Way addition is full of twists and turns, feeling like a natural extension of the main plot. The escape plan is rewarding and keeps you on your toes. Whether you got the “true” ending or not, completing it is satisfying.

I think Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days remains a must-play for fans of the zombie survival genre, and the Spill Zone update is a worthy addition to the overall experience, now available on Steam.
