When Minecraft Dungeons was announced, a lot of people, myself included, were skeptical of a Minecraft dungeon crawler spin-off, but at its release I had the opportunity to play the game with my friends, and it was such a blast.
The items and weapons are, obviously, all based on Minecraft, but they behave in a fresh way that makes the game really fast paced and fun, there is a huge diversity of them, and you can modify and upgrade to make them even more entertaining to use.
The enemies are very well designed, and the ones who aren’t from the original game feel loyal to it. The different levels are stunning, very beautiful and carefully planned, it makes everything feel cohesive, creating an excitement to explore and keep playing to get new items and advance in the story.
Something I personally didn’t find pleasing is the constant need to swap your items for better ones from later levels, because if you like a certain weapon, it can become obsolete quite fast and there’s not a way to upgrade them enough that they are able to compete with stronger ones, but of course, not everyone finds this an issue, and it’s fitting for a dungeon crawler.
Overall, Minecraft Dungeons is a wonderful surprise, and it’s very polished, with every aspect of it being visibly made with care and attention, Mojang and Double Eleven did a pretty good job at using the original game and transforming it into something totally different, but at the same time faithful to Minecraft’s core elements.
Forget peaceful building and tranquil farming, Minecraft Dungeons hurls you headfirst into a heroic quest where danger lurks behind every pixel (and block). Set in the familiar Minecraft universe, this spin-off trades crafting tables for chaos, and dares you to fight back against the forces of darkness armed with enchanted gear and courage. So prepare your weapons and lets dive into this Minecraftian adventure !
The story, though simple, sets the tone: a once-rejected villager is consumed by a dark artifact, becoming the evil Arch-Illager. His corruption spreads, and only you can stop it. You’re not a chosen one « neo » ehum, just a brave soul stepping into the fray. But in this world, that’s enough.
Gameplay is pure action-RPG, simplified but satisfying. Think Diablo, if Diablo were dipped in blocks and polished for all ages. You venture into randomly generated dungeons, battle hordes of enemies, gather loot, upgrade your gear and head back in. What makes it shine is the variety of enchantments and weapons: you can experiment with crazy builds and adapt your style freely. Combat is punchy and fluid that becomes a blast of chaotic fun.
Visually, it stays true to Minecraft’s signature blocky charm but elevates it with glowing effects, atmospheric lighting and gorgeously crafted biomes, from swampy ruins to icy peaks and redstone mines. Each level has its own musical theme, with epic orchestral moments that heighten the thrill of battle.
That said, it’s not flawless. The game is fairly short and replay value relies mostly on increasing the difficulty. If you are seeking deep storytelling or class complexity may find it lacking. But for what it aims to be, a fast, fun, and accessible dungeon crawler, it succeeds brilliantly.
Minecraft Dungeons is a fantastic gateway into the dungeon crawler genre, especially for Minecraft fans. It’s a bite-sized adventure packed with action, charm, and just enough challenge to keep you diving back in.
Decent fun, a bit of a classic cartoony dungeon crawler. Some fun levels, enemies, progression is OK. Nothing special really but I’m happy to take what I can get in regard to local co-op games on PC since they’re pretty rare overall.
When I first tried out Minecraft Dungeons, I really had no expectations of sorts, as the pixel art all into cubes and unrefined graphic art, compared to more advanced dungeon crawling games using Unreal Engine, or other advanced 3D engines, simply would visually outplay this game.
It started off so on top of this cliff, at the beginning pretty empty where your base is situated. You start exploring the map and so select a first mission where you will encounter at the beginning a number of undead cubed zombies to then face spiders, creepers, sorcerors, etc… all under the control of this Arch-Illager bad boss, and it’s a great experience from there onwards. You should though start to consider that each map if played wholly and trying to discover all chests and secrets, can take from 15-20 minutes to complete (and gets worse with the DLCs with some which can take even 30 or more minutes), so watch out as this is not a game when playing online you can set to pause, or place your character in a safe position. There can be done indeed a lot of level grinding, and completing a first game playthrough will unblock some additional options and later the Apocalypse leveling mode.
Another very strong point is the great number of inventory you can either discover and get playing the maps and discovering chests, or purchase in shops which will appear in your base using the gold coins you have gained. The variety of customization of your gear, of enhancing your equipment and weapons, turns this game even more into “gold”. You will discover a lot of ways to receive other good stuff but, it’s not good on my behalf of spoilering over this.
Overall: It’s a great game with a sense of playability and of continued “replay” factor being extremely high. The co-op matching with friends can be extremely entertaining although watch out in joining matches which will match your player’s level too, as participating to power level your character in tougher matches, might heavily contribute in the failure of the mission (especially if you get killed and force the mission to turn into “night mode”).
So have good fun in this cube pixelled set of worlds awaiting to surprise you with its great depth.
Finally, this game can satisfy all the hardcore Minecrafter fans! Its like 2 worlds have collided (Normal Mining + Dungeons world)
It was a recipe for success from the beginning!
Minecraft Dungeons is unlike its name, not a game where you mine, craft, and explore dungeons. Instead, it is a Minecraft inspired dungeon crawler.
The game is on the easier side of the dungeon crawlers but that does not mean it isn’t fun to play. In a way, it reminds me more of the dynasty warriors games since you flatten entire hordes of monsters in seconds.
In this game, you find an abandon of gear with different enchantments and item-specific buffs, and with a ton of different kinds of weapons, armor, accessories, and more you can make the perfect gear set that fits your play style.
Before starting a level you get to choose your difficulty, the higher the difficulty the higher level the loot will be that you find on your dungeon run.
Level to level you find yourself in a completely different looking area, and each level has a slight bit of randomization to it but this is in most cases just a similar looking path that goes to the left or a room with a flipped perspective so makes you wonder why they implemented the randomize.
The main levels that come with the base game have secrets to find, and finding these will unlock even more levels.
My main big downside with this game is that it does not save your character on a cloud (at least not on pc). So make sure when you get a new pc to make a backup of your characters save files and transport them over to your new pc.
