Moana-Inspired ‘Voyagers of Nera’ Expands Its Underwater Biomes

The game adds underwater mechanics that even Subnautica lacks.

Voyagers of Nera has been on my mind lately, and I think I need to re-install it and give it another run. The lack of underwater exploration was something I noted when I shared my impressions at launch, so it’s definitely something I look forward to. While the update focuses on what players can find beneath the surface, it also introduces several changes across the rest of the world, adding new activities, rewards, and improvements.

The largest change comes from a complete redesign of the underwater environment. Ancient Sunken Ruins replace much of the previously barren landscape. These ruins vary in size, from scattered structures to larger villages and sanctuaries that contain resources and story details tied to Nera’s past. Larger ruins also introduce challenges tied to exploration, with players needing to prepare for deeper dives before reaching valuable rewards.

Exploration is now tied to a new depth system that limits how far players can safely descend. Every biome includes areas with different depths. New Diver’s Reed equipment increases the maximum safe diving depth, while exceeding those limits causes pressure sickness that rapidly drains oxygen. Bubble Plants placed throughout the ocean can restore oxygen during longer expeditions, and new consumables provide additional breathing time when exploring remote areas.

Gathering underwater has also changed with the introduction of the Diver’s Knife. Rather than collecting resources by hand, players now need a dedicated tool to harvest materials. Higher tier versions unlock access to rarer materials used in crafting, giving players another progression path tied directly to ocean exploration.

Sealed Items can now be discovered and opened at the Arcanist Station to unlock recipes or crafting materials, while Locked Doors tempt players to search for hidden codes that reveal rewards and additional lore. Restorable Spirit Shrines also appear throughout the world, allowing players to rebuild them and collect renewable gifts from returning Spirits.

Combat beneath the surface has been expanded as well. Three new underwater enemies now appear such as Deepling Threshers, Shockjelly creatures that temporarily stun players on contact, and Glimmerlings that reward players for successfully chasing them down. Underwater combat itself has also been updated with blocking, and stagger mechanics, making fights function more like encounters on land.

Equipment progression has been reworked through the new Vestige system, replacing the previous imbuement mechanics. Gear now receive crafted upgrades that enhance specific attributes or improve performance against certain enemy types. Vestiges occupy dedicated slots on equipment, creating more flexibility when choosing how to specialize in different sets.

And of course, a compendium that tracks unlocked recipes and collected lore, making it easier to monitor overall progression. There have been a host of other tweaks and balances throughout the new update of Voyagers of Nera, far too long to list here, so you might want to check out all the new changes on Steam. I love watching indie games like this grow, and I’ll definitely be diving back in again.
