Project Zomboid has been in Early Access since 2013, and for most of that time the map of Knox Country has remained largely the same familiar stretch of Kentucky. Players who have spent hundreds of hours navigating the same streets, the same houses, and the same landmarks are about to see something very different. Build 42, arriving on the stable branch this Wednesday, will deliver a map overhaul that the developers are calling the biggest update to Knox Country yet.
The surface area of the map has doubled since B41, as the art department added 1,400 new unique buildings and 20,000 new tiles, bringing the game’s total tile count to 35,000. Now 400 procedural basements and 75 unique ones can be found scattered throughout the world. Every town in the game has been reworked, including Riverside, West Point, Rosewood, Fallas Lake, Muldraugh, Ekron, and Dixie, with a new standard that makes every building and house unique rather than copied from a template, as revealed by the developers.
Art Director Ayrton Orio explained that since B41, the art department hired four new map artists, and used the South of Muldraugh as a proving ground for a more detailed style of world building. The reaction from players during the Unstable beta was so positive that it triggered the hiring of the enlarged team that made this overhaul possible. Three entirely new towns were added on the western edge of the map, Brandenburg on the Ohio River, the agricultural town of Ekron, and Irvington in the southwest with its famous race track.
New locations beyond the towns include an abandoned orphanage, a revamped logging compound, an entirely new prison, and a boy scout camp. Two new Challenge modes are available, Top of the World which starts you at the top of a skyscraper, and 28 Seconds Later which fills the world with sprinting zombies. Returning classics like A Really CD DA and Winter is Coming are back with improvements.
It's the biggest update yet

The update also brings a new Main Menu illustration, but the story behind it is worth noting. During the Unstable launch, the team used a piece of art that the community quickly identified as AI generated, prompting an immediate removal. The team has since committed to no AI in their art processes and developed a new rendered style that matches the in game flyers, newspapers, and leaflets. The new Main Menu is the first result of that direction, with plans to make it more interactive over time.
Build 42.20 arrives on the stable branch for Steam on July 29, and for the game that has been in Early Access for over a decade, this feels like the moment the map finally catches up to what players imagined Kentucky could be.
