    Raft: A Shark Tale
    7

I would say that Raft is one of those games that seems pretty straightforward from the beginning, but soon becomes so addictive and before you know it, you’re hooked. It starts with you floating on a tiny raft in the middle of the ocean with a hook, which is about it. Then as you fish bits out of the water and put together a few planks, you soon find yourself building a floating base. It sounds pretty chill, and for the most part, it is, except there is a shark that just wont leave you alone and will always chew on your raft like its life depends on it.

Something I really like about Raft is how chill and nice it can be. The ocean visuals are actually quite pretty, the sound of the waves is soothing, and there’s something satisfying to watching your little raft grow into something huge. The crafting is simple but fun, and finding islands to explore breaks up the floating around nicely. But I would say the best part is playing with friends because you can build together, mess around, and just chill most of the time except for the times when a shark randomly pops up out of the water. It’s one of those games that’s just way better off with people around.

Of course not everything’s perfect, the game does get a bit same old after some time, especially if you’re on your own. There are moments when it feels like you’re just doing the same old stuff all over again. Also, if you are playing just for the story it isn’t that big of a deal and if you chase it the game will be over before you know it.

Despite all that though, I still had a blast. Raft is perfect if you like survival games that don’t take themselves too seriously. It’s chill enough and lets you get creative plus it’s just the right mix of relaxing and stressful. And If you enjoy building and crafting with mates, its definitely worth checking out!

A floating masterpiece - raft deserves more...

    • Pros
    • Unique environmental storytelling
    • Relaxing yet engaging gameplay
    • Seamless co-op experience
    • Cons
    • No sequel or DLC content
    • Late game pacing issues

Raft isn’t just a survival game – it defined its own genre. When it first came out, it felt like the beginning of a whole new wave of creativity in indie survival crafting games. The core loop is simple: you’re stranded on a raft in the middle of an endless ocean but what this game does with that premise is genius.

The map design is one of my favorite things. Every Point of Interest tells its own story. There’s no need for long cutscenes or walls of text – if you look around, you’ll understand what happened, why it matters and how the world got the way it is. That kind of environmental storytelling is rare and Raft nails it.

This game is chill. It’s one of the few games I can load up after a long day and just vibe. Whether I’m expanding my raft, diving for scrap or exploring a spooky abandoned facility, I’m always having a good time. I’ve spent countless hours with friends and solo and somehow it never feels repetitive.

But here’s the part that stings: it feels like Raft is one-and-done. Despite its huge success and devoted fanbase, there’s been no sequel, no DLC’s and as far as I know, the studio behind it (Redbeet Interactive) has disbanded. That’s honestly heartbreaking. Raft has the kind of potential that begs to be expanded – new oceans, new mysteries, maybe even new mechanics.

It’s rare to find a game that captures imagination like this one did. I just hope someone out there realizes how special it is and continues what Redbeet started.

Until then. I’ll keep my raft floating – and keep dreaming of what could’ve been.

Raft is a great twist on the survival game. Instead of running around on land, gathering materials to build a base and defend it, your entire world is your raft, lose it and you’re dead. You can’t just run away from danger and start in a new area. It’s a sort of survival base building – on a raft, with a mean ol’ grumpy shark chasing you down nonstop. So far developers are active too. Quite a steep learning curve and you will most likely become shark bait on your first try, or starve to death on the first island you hop onto while that scary ass shark tears your raft into pieces, but soon the soothing sea and it’s calming waves becomes your ally and you begin to learn it’s secrets and grow your puny piece of wood and torn plastic into a mighty seaworthy settlement capable of sustaining life.
Basically, there’s not a lot of dangerous foes for the most part, not until much, much later in the game anyway. I mean, there’s a shark, yeah, so you stay on the raft and stab him in his sharky face when he tries to nibble on your raft. The best part of this game is that it forces true cooperation in a survival game. We all have that one friend that just runs off in Minecraft to do their own thing and not really interact. Well, that won’t happen here. The worst part of this game is that it feels like the developers took notes about how early survival crafting games worked, but could not innovate any further. It’s all a giant grind that is all too in your face. For this price-point I expect a bit more nuance and elegance. the game visuals are mesmerizing, while the gameplay can be engaging if done right. It is a game that is both challenging and fun, where most troubles have a temporal solution rather than a permanent one until you reach a certain point. The ocean looks beautiful and comes alive as waves threaten to swallow your Raft or put you in reach of the shark to bite.
Gameplay wise, it’s what you’d expect from a survival/sandbox game. Base building, hunting, fishing, looting as well as it’s own story based missions. All of which it does rather well. So much so that I’m excited for the next chapter. All in all, I recommend the game. I truly believe that with the right support the developers can shape this game into a beautiful story with enough content to keep you playing for longer than a few hours!

    • Pros
    • Building
    • Lots of islands to research
    • Crafting
    • World design
    • Cons
    • Some bugs
    • Some entities
    • Sometimes it is hard to grind resources (especially if you are playing solo)
    • The items in the game are a bit scarce

First of all, the Raft was released in 2018. At the beginning of the game, you start on a 2×2 raft. You have a hook and with the help of this hook you pull plastic, leaves, pieces of wood and barrels floating in the environment and the materials you get from here are vital because you cannot find those materials in any other way. Of course, you can find crates on some islands, but that’s another matter. In the game we are exploring the islands by crafting and in the meantime we need to eat and drink water or we die. We can even plant trees in the game. If you can survive and improve yourself further, you can build an engine for your raft, diving equipment for yourself and explore the deep.

You can play the game alone, but I think the real fun comes when you play with your friends. Together you can grow your boat and make a huge ship. You can say that I don’t need a ship, I can swim. That’s a bit difficult. Because there is a shark traveling in the sea and it always follows you. Sometimes you need to go under the sea without being eaten by the shark, and then you need to achieve this by using your own skills.

You may get a little bored as you progress in the game, but if you like survival games, I don’t think you will get bored, especially when you explore the large islands in the game. Also make sure that your ship won’t get lost when you reach the islands, because there is always a current in the sea and the ship will never stop unless you throw an anchor.

All in all, the game is very enjoyable for those who like survival games and perfect for spending time with friends. As in every game, you may encounter 1-2 bugs, but don’t let that bother you. Let the waves take you wherever they want.

    • Not too hard and not too easy
    • Relaxing
    • Various islands so you never run out of resources
    • Cons
    • No tutorial for beginners

I’ve loved this game for years and keep coming back to it.

There is a variety of things I really love about it. The “base”, your raft, goes everywhere with you. So you don’t get lost as easily as in other static bases in other games.

Crafting is good because you actually learn the recipes for each resource and don’t have to guess what they are.

The bosses get harder the more advanced you get, but are not impossible, which I’m thankful for. There are mods for those that don’t like fighting, which is good.

Farming is basic, but fun, as are the food and drink recipes.

I love the decorations, it really does make your raft your home. And customizing is simple.

Raft may be older now, but it’s still one of the best top survival games that is timeless.

Set sail on the gaming high seas with "RAFT"

    • Beautiful Seascapes
    • Constant Updates
    • Great Crafting System
    • Engaging Co-op Play
    • Cons
    • Repetitive Gameplay
    • Potential Grind

“RAFT” isn’t just a game, it’s your chance to prove that you’d conquer the high seas if pirates ever come knocking ! That’s what I said to my daughter to convince her to play another game than Minecraft and Roblox. And I wasn’t wrong, she loved the game so much.

In this game, you’re stranded in the vast ocean with little more than determination and a hook. Your mission, if you accept it, Mr Ethan Hunt? Gather debris, build and expand your raft, and fend off Bruce, your trusty shark buddy who occasionally nibbles at your raft, and who seems to think you’re his next meal.

In ‘RAFT,’ you’ll learn the true meaning of making something out of nothing and surviving by the skin of your teeth. So crafting is your lifeline. You’ll create tools, weapons, and even a floating garden to stave off hunger and thirst. It’s a delicate balance between survival and progress.

And if ever you find yourself feeling a bit lonely on the serene sea, fear not! This game offers a multiplayer mode that allows you to embark on your nautical adventures with friends. Together, you can explore distant islands, craft the Jolly Roger of your dreams, and engage in epic battles to assert your position in the marine hierarchy, potentially even surpassing the notorious Bruce (the shark, you know, we talked about it earlier).

So, if you’re ready to embrace the tranquility and trials of a life adrift on the open water, RAFT offers a unique journey worth diving into.

    • Building is better than in most survival games

A special survival game where man-eating sharks wait for their food to die. On a small wood raft, players have to slowly get the essentials by gathering food and items to survive in the sea. Creating weapons allows to defend and survive longer. I love to play together as a team as it creates suspense and excitement.

    Stress on a boat
    6
    • Pros
    • Expansive and interesting world.
    • Lots of things to do.
    • Good progression.
    • Cons
    • Lots of the game is centered around extremely mediocre combat.
    • Story is very uninteresting, and every character encountered is just outright unlikeable.
    • The end of the game drags on, a lot.

Astute readers may have noticed that this is an edited review of mine. My first review was written after having spent 5ish hours on the game and having a generally good but stressful time. After this review, however, me and a friend of mine spent a good deal of time getting through the story. Experiencing the story of the game and visiting the late-game islands is a real drag. It feels like the game puts a lot of focus into parts of the game that are not survival based, and the combat gains a prominence it simply cannot support. The combat is awful, and the fact that the game leans more and more on it as the game goes on is annoying.

What I liked, and what I wanted from the game, was the feeling that you struggled against the environment, that survival was tough but rewarding, and that exploration was fun and casual. Instead, as the game wore on, there was an increasing amount of really dreary puzzles, followed by time consuming and frustrating combat, which began to dominate how I felt about the game as it wore on.

I also really disliked the overall story, and the ending was not at all good.

    • Grindy for One Person

Well ahoy there mateys! Arrrr you excited about chapter 3 of Raft? Yes, me too. Before chapter 3, I have some thoughts on Raft so far.

Start off on a one square, Jack Dawson shaped door(DiCaprio from Titanic). And adventure, build, and uncover the mystery of what is going on in ‘Water World’. All while trying to avoid a shark that is seemingly immortal, a giant bird, and some seriously angry boars. Sounds fun right?

Here are my thoughts on the game so far.

    Pros:

Building. The building in the game is a far cry from most survival games. There is no land to build on! You collect trash and build a floating fortress of a ship to survive the weather and shark attacks. As you go along the open waters, you can unlock new things to build. Also, the way you can decorate is far superior to what I thought when I first played. So much you can build and decorate!

Easy on the Eyes. The graphics are a nice clean feel of openness and subtle beauty. It may not be everyone’s style of graphics. I do believe it does give it a unique and still pleasing view along the water.

Planned Content. The devs have done well and have even more they are promising to deliver. If the past chapters are anything to go by. The future is looking good for Raft.

The Story. Again, the devs haven’t disappointed in my opinion. The story has been intriguing and keeping me involved, even with a slight grind for more advanced builds.

The amount of details in the game are great! From the animals, islands and items, to the decorations themselves. It gives you an in depth feeling of wild but yet, controlled amount of decor. That is hard to do for most games.

    Cons:

While I could find a few more basic things to fit this category. I think others have mentioned them or it’s a few bugs that can be ironed out. I think the big issue is for one person to build a massive, sustaining ship on their own is a little time consuming. But, that could be a good thing if you are only playing one or two games. It keeps you playing. From my perspective. I play many different games, so, me personally, I just don’t have time to build a replica of the RMS Queen Mary. But I can see why someone would want to. That said. I really enjoyed playing with a group. Was loads of fun that kept me coming back.

I am, like most, waiting for chapter 3 to come out so we can revisit this curious story line.
If you find any of my opinions helpful. You could leave a thumbs up. Thanks and be sure you pack your life preserver.

    • New take on Survival
    • Challenging and Rewarding Survival
    • Cons
    • Combat could use improvement
    • More Content needed

Raft is great Solo or with a group. Scavenging for supplies while adrift and at Nature’s mercy is satisfying and rewarding. The graphics are definitely “Toon-ish” but the environment is very pleasing. This game is one of the hardest to stop playing as “one more thing real fast” will be said often as another hour slips by. The different levels of Survival (going from stone-age tech into modern, etc) is very balanced and rewarding. As soon as one factor of survival stops being difficult to acquire, another takes its place. The Story is compelling although it suffers in only having the main few points, very little side activities or prompts exist outside the main story which, when playing through the 2nd time, is not super challenging. However, more content is being added by the developers and they have done a very good job so far.

Raft is a survival crafting game set in a flooded world.

You start on a small raft, being circled by a shark that can destroy parts of the raft.
But you build it up to a large ship with engines that power it and animals that roam the ship over time.
Building in this game is one of my favorite things to do in Raft, the main buildings like walls and doors are snapped to a grid while the large assortment of decorative items can be placed freely around the raft.

Following the main story of Raft, it will take you to a lot of different locations that have all been abandoned in search of the coordinates to a community where your family is located.
Each island is unique and has different puzzles to complete to get the next coordinates and more useful additions to your raft.

At the start of Raft, you have to pay attention to a lot of things, food, thirst, and a shark, but over time a lot of these tasks become mostly automated.
From collectors that fish out basic material out of the ocean to a tank that automatically fills up and cleans the water, it gives you a lot more time to explore the many islands and build the raft of your dreams. (as a bonus tip if you get a friend who does the fishing and cooking you pretty much automated everything, You can thank me later.)

Raft continues to grow with many large updates and I cannot wait to see what else Red Beet Interactive brings next.
