Rust is taking to the skies in the newly released Airborne update. In this update, we will have a few different ways to travel the skies and bring the pain to our enemies.
The first and maybe coolest new vehicle is the Attack Helicopter, which can be purchased at the bandit camp for the bargain price of 2,250 scrap. This two-seater death machine comes with a front-mounted turret similar to the deployable auto turret, along with two side pods that can be loaded with HV and incendiary rockets that can be fired by the pilot.
But your wingman isn’t just there for the ride; he can activate the gunner monitor, take control of the front-mounted turret and rockets, and allow the pilot to fly the Heli. Besides just attacking, the gunner can also deploy flares to try to deflect any incoming homing missiles. A well-aimed rocket will still turn this death machine into a pile of scrap.
Hot air balloons can also now be upgraded with their own new armor upgrade, boosting their overall health as well as adding additional cover and protection for the passengers. This new armor upgrade can be purchased at the Bandit Camp vehicle parts vendor.
You always need the right tool for the job in front of you, so let me introduce you to what I like to call the can opener, but the game calls it the Homing Missile Launcher. You can build one of these babies with a level 2 workbench, 20 HQM, 3 metal pipes, 1 tech trash, and 1 CCTV. But using one of these takes a little skill. Once you identify your target, a lock-on bar will display. Once locked, fire off a missile, but you need to keep the vehicle in your sights for the missile to fly true. Get around the flares and bag yourself a bird.
If the pilots were lucky enough to jump ship before impact, they made use of the new parachute. The parachute will allow you to slow your fall from great heights, as well as travel great distances silently. You can use weapons while descending, but while using them, you won’t be able to maneuver the chute until you put the weapons away. Each use of the parachute will degrade it by 20%. As the chute degrades, it will make you fall faster and be harder to maneuver. Also, hitting solid objects, especially at great speeds, is going to hurt. After being used, an unpacked version will be at your feet. You will have to repack the chute before it can be used again. But be warned: while gliding down, you can still be shot out of the sky by SAM sites, auto turrets, and, of course, eagle-eyed players. This new craft-able item can also be made at a Tier 2 workbench using two tarps, two sewing kits, and fifty pieces of cloth.
Now that you have taken to the skies, you will love the new feature that allows view distances of player structures up to five times farther away than the normal 300 m. Now you can see 1,500 meters away. No more ninja SAM sites popping up on top of you. This is all due to the new rendering system, which allows for much more efficiency by using the GPU for all the hard work.
For the tidy survivors out there, get ready to enjoy the new weapon rack pack, which is available from the Rust item store. These new racks allow you a quick and versatile way to efficiently organize, display, and store your weapons. This pack comes with three different wall-mounted weapon racks and a floor model as well.
With all these new fun toys to play with, I can’t wait to get out there and kill, I mean , play with some strangers. So what are you looking toward the most? And in what sneaky ways do you plan to use them? Let me know in the comments below.
