i know people will hate me for this, but i’ve never really liked The forest or Sons of the Forest. I gave both games a fair try… multiple times… even – and i just can’t get into them. For me, they’re more of a walking simulator than an actual survival sandbos. You spend most of your time running around, collecting sticks, and placing logs one by one, and somehow that’s supposed to be “immersive”. I get that some players enjoy that slow, realistic pace, but personally, it just feels tedious and repetitive rather than rewarding.
The building system is probably the most overhyped feature. Sure, it’s “freeform” but it’s also extremely basic and clunky. I’ve seen youtubers spending hours stacking wooden pillars just to make some fancy wall, and while that’s cool to watch (for some), playing it is another story. It feels like busywork with zero payoff. There’s none of that “satisfying loop” you get in other survival games when gathering resources or upgrading your base. Everything takes too long and gives too little in return, which makes the entire experience feel like a chore.
Then there’s the companion system. I think the devs had a good idea, but the execution was… questionable. I’ll never forget the moment i told Kevin to collect logs, and he started chopping down the tree my entire base was built on. Watching hours of work crash to the ground because your “helper” can’t tell the difference between a forest and a house is not exactly a fun memory. Maybe they’ve fixed it since, but the fact that it was even possible at release says enough.
Don’t get me wrong – i see why people love this game. It looks beautiful, the atmosphere is great, and the horror elements are done really well. But for me, it lacks what makes survival games truly engaging: the feeling of progress, a clunky system. I really wanted to enjoy Sons of the Forest, but it ended up being more frustration than fun.
Final Verdict. If you loved The Forest, you’ll probably enjoy this one too. But if you’re expecting a fresh, exciting survival experience – this might just feel like deja vu with prettier graphics.
It’s a great game. Much better than The Forest, they improved on everything such as the AI, MAP, STORY, Building. The combat is fun against the intelligent AI. I really do recommend this game if you liked the Forest, I wish it had VR support like the forest did but there hasn’t been any big updates for sons of the forest for a while, which is the biggest downside. Survival aspect is cool, with the cannibals and you having to fish and build a camp to survive. Finding food and weapons isn’t easy with these hidden bunkers. The coolest part for me is the AI that helps you with building a base, chopping wood I think it’s definitely the best feature they have added and is sort of a message to the world and future of how life will be. It’s really creepy when the cannibals are around and the creepy animations when they intimidate you especially at night, and man the creepy genetic mess up cannibals are spine chilling. I would really recommend picking this up on sale and only if they continue with future updates which they have released only one this year.
The graphics are amazing, a massive step up from the forest but even with a good machine the performance can be pretty bad, hopefully the Devs can work on that. The weapons are awesome and feel amazing especially the shotgun when you blast the cannibals in the head or even use the chainsaw and you can even get captured by the cannibals and get trapped inside the camp. With friends this experience is way better, also fun as solo but nowhere as fun as if you have a squad to play the story with, build camps, laugh at the AI that destroys your base because it wants to. If you’re a fan of exploration, combat, survival and horror then this game is definitely for you.
Great game to pick up if you tend to play with friends on sessions like minecraft or terraria. Absolute gem, really fun, immersive and with an actual survival need with decent difficulty.
First of all, I’d like to start by saying that I’ve completely completed the game, entered all the caves that can be entered, and bought almost every item that can be obtained. Since The Forest came out, after every update, I finish the game and wonder “I wonder if the ending has changed?” I would look up and in most of them they added either a new option or a new cinematic at the end. In short, it seems that the producer company will not give us everything immediately in this game, as it did in the previous game. The story is moving too hastily and has no sustainability, it seems as if they were told, “Put this here and let’s finish the story.” Before the game was released, people were saying, “It’s a game that could break new ground in artificial intelligence.” Naturally, I was very hopeful, and yes, my hope was not broken. The artificial intelligence was really well made. Kelvin would do whatever you told him to do, get tired after a while, help build a house, help him build a house when necessary. It annoys you and makes you laugh while playing with your friends, Kelvin is a very entertaining artificial intelligence with everything, but it made me a little sad that Virginia’s hand does not serve any purpose other than holding a gun. It has only one function other than a gun, and sometimes it brings you things like fish and grass, but it leaves things on the ground.
Unlike the first game, this time we have a navigation device, that is, a map. It’s nice to at least know where we are. Not only this device, we can cover distances quickly with vehicles such as one-wheeled scooters, golf carts and hang gliders. As for weapons, it is not just bow and arrow; We can also obtain weapons such as crossbows, shotguns, sniper rifles and pistols. The game helps us find these weapons.
There are various and beautifully designed caves and bunkers. There are camping areas in most places, but of course these are left to the cannibals. We are fighting against different types of creatures, and on the other hand, you are trying to go to the marked points and find out what is happening on this island.
Thanks to the players, the game was released in a hurry because it was subjected to comments such as “put it out now” or “enough, we’re tired of waiting”. I played The Forest for 120 hours and I encountered many bugs that turned me off from the game, but I have never encountered such a big bug in this game. Moreover, according to the statement made by the producer company, they could not add even half of the things they wanted to add to the game. In short, this game can become very, very good with updates. In my opinion, the game will be much better by just updating the story and adding a few more building models, without even needing new items. It’s definitely fun, I recommend it.
Here is Sons Of The Forest, a great new horror game with a big open world and great horror music for Caves and combat. Also, it has outside Forest background music and sound effects for birds makes you feel more part of the horror experience inside. The game has a new building system that allows you to build any structure in any shape or size, while the first game called The Forest didn’t allow doing so. Both games do have traps, but I do hope developers will add more traps to the sequel. Sons of the Forest also has a ton of tools and useful items that can be used to help the player beat the game also has a good amount of melee weapons and guns that will help you defeat bosses and enemies in your path. Game developers are passionate about the game and often add new content. Thanks for reading my review.
Well, as you probably already know (and there’s a hint in the game’s title), it’s a survival game smack in the middle of a vast forest where you need to stay alive. In the first installment, we were a plane crash survivor on a quest to find his lost son. This time, we’re military folks who’ve also survived a crash.
After a few hours of playing, you’ll discover that the survival mechanics are unexpectedly player-friendly. No need to turn into a lumberjack chopping trees or desperately searching for food and water. Instead, it encourages cleverness and ingenuity, letting you focus on the more enjoyable parts of the game. Imagine constructing wild treehouses, engaging in skirmishes with cannibals, and making heart-pounding escapes from eerie, cave-dwelling monsters.
The game map is bigger than the first, with far more distinct geographical zones.
This sequel also steps up its game compared to its predecessor. The improved AI, which can surprisingly catch you off guard (expect some good old jump scares), sticks with you throughout your horrifying adventure if you’re not playing in co-op. After all, exploring a mutant-filled cave is less frightening when you’ve got company.
I’d recommend this game to horror survival enthusiasts. You’re in for a spine-tingling good time, especially if you play with friends. The more, the merrier, right?
Sons of the Forest is a great sequel to a gem of a game. It is still very much in early access but the devs are actively working on rolling out new content every few weeks. So far the game has been what I expected with tons of room to grow. If the devs keep on track with their current pace, they will have a finished product in a years time. Alot of new cannibals and new challenges await the player in Sons of the Forest, as well as some new tech that wasn’t available in the first game, making for some unique base building and strategies. With seasons being added to the game, we see the tricks of using water to your advantage fade during the winter with the cannibals at a distinct advantage in the winter months. Food becomes scarce for the player and the cold weather makes it difficult to make any real headway. This is ideal IMO. Winter should be a time to hunker down and wait it out so to speak. So far all in all the game exceeded my expectations. It’s in a lot better shape than I thought it would be. In the coming months, I’d like to update my review and rate it again.
The first few hours of playing the game are fun. The graphics are amazing, the howling of the cannibals is creepy, exploring to find items is fun. I have never played The Forest so I am coming into this game with a fresh unbiased viewpoint. Personally I feel it is a bit overrated as I have played other survival games that have more to offer in the same development state.
Then after the newness wears off the game is just okay as of right now in it’s state. The novelty of the forementioned just becomes background noise. Exploring and following the GPS is more chore like and takes away from actually needing to explore the island. All important items, follow GPS. The AI is not very good. Cannibals stand around as you loot their camp. Run long enough and you don’t even have to worry about fighting. The island is relatively barren with few cannibal camps.
The “survival” aspect is pretty forgiving. Food and Water is extremely easy to get. Eat something poisonous or rotten without any worry. You can gather so many items that respawn, that you become a walking hardware store. Building a base is not even really something you “need” to do unless you just want to. Going Nomad mode works just as well. Base building aspect is pretty good with a variety of “wood” options.
I feel that this game can go either way right now depending on how future updates go. It can become a really fun and challenging survival horror game or it can fall into the shadows of other run of the mill survival games.
