A major update has arrived for Misery, introducing a wide range of gameplay changes that reshape how players approach survival in the zone. The patch significantly expands customization, reworks core systems, and adds new mechanics that alter both moment-to-moment play and long-term progression. Break out the Geiger Counter, we’re jumping headfirst into what’s new.
Players can now choose from four presets: Explorer, Adventurer, Survivor, and Hardcore which includes permadeath. Each option targets a different level of challenge. Progression incentives are tied to this mode, as certain achievements can only be unlocked under its conditions.
Additionally, a broad range of adjustable settings allows users to fine-tune elements such as enemy strength, loot frequency, expedition timing, and even toggles like friendly fire and permadeath. This flexibility marks a shift from earlier versions that offered far fewer options for custom gameplay.

Achievements have also been introduced, with more than 30 available for players to find and unlock. These range across different playstyles and difficulty levels, providing goals that weren’t previously part of the game. Everyone likes that dopamine hit when they unlock something, right?
Right, anyway, support for additional platforms and control schemes has expanded. Full compatibility with Steam Deck and gamepads is now implemented, alongside cloud save functionality. This allows players to move between devices without losing progress, while control adjustments aim to make non-keyboard play more viable.
The weapon system has been rebalanced, particularly in how damaged gear is handled. Players can now sell broken weapons, and the repair economy has been adjusted to better reflect risk and reward. There’s also a small chance to find intact weapons in high-danger areas, encouraging exploration of more hazardous zones.
The food system has changed as well and most items found in the world are now spoiled, carrying negative health effects despite being consumable. Reliable food sources are primarily tied to traders, and storage mechanics like refrigeration have become more important.

Existing locations have been altered, with changes to terrain and building layouts that may disrupt player familiarity. The Nuclear Bunker biome has received updates, including new locations and improved ambient detail. Early elements of vertical exploration are being introduced as well, through a climbing mechanic, currently tied to ladder use in certain areas such as the suburban biome.
Additional fixes and improvements round out this update. Performance optimization has been addressed, along with various bug fixes, including the removal of a teleporting enemy issue. Localization updates are also included, and previously unavailable items like mushrooms can once again be collected.
The developers have indicated that this update is part of a broader effort to prepare Misery for continued expansion, with more content and systems planned in future releases.
