Subnautica 2: What Makes the Sequel Different from the First Game

Multiplayer support is just one of the new changes coming.

Unknown Worlds Entertainment has revealed how Subnautica 2 will build on the original’s underwater survival adventure while taking players to new depths. Instead of returning to Planet 4546B, the sequel sends explorers to a brand-new alien ocean world featuring diverse biomes, new locations, a range of fresh dangers, and co-op support.

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a multiplayer mode for up to four players. Friends can now dive in together, gather resources, build bases, and face challenges as a team. Whether you’re hunting rare creatures or uncovering the story on your own, the ability to switch between solo play and seamless online co-op adds a new layer of freedom. While solo players can stick to a structured narrative through key story missions, those playing in co-op can explore more freely and shape their own journey together.

Under the hood, Subnautica 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5. The game takes advantage of next‑generation lighting and volumetric water effects to create a more immersive world that reacts to player movement. Rays of sunlight cut through the waves, storms churn the surface, and underwater currents shift as you explore. These visuals not only improve how Subnautica looks but also affect gameplay by changing creature behavior and the availability of resources.

Exploration now feels more personal thanks to genetic upgrades and mutations. By harvesting DNA samples, players can boost swimming speed, withstand crushing depths, or see in the dark with bioluminescent vision. These abilities encourage deeper dives into extreme environments and reward careful planning. At the same time, new submersibles, propulsion devices, and base‑building tools let you craft sprawling underwater habitats designed for both function and style.

After a recent delay announcement, Early Access is set to begin on PC in the second quarter of 2026. According to the developers, the extended development time gives them the chance to introduce new environments, enhance vehicle customization, create additional tools, deepen the narrative, and bring in more unique creatures to Subnautica 2.
