Subnautica-Inspired ‘Astrometica’ Drifts into Early Access on December 10

Lost in the unknown.

With over 80,000 wishlists, the space survival game by BeryMery, Astrometica, is nearly ready to release. In the game, you will scavenge debris and asteroids for resources, craft equipment to extend the time you can breathe while outside your ship, build a base, and uncover what happened in this asteroid field, as it seems you are not alone.

Being inspired by the storytelling of the popular Subnautica games, you can expect to unravel this one in a similar way. The developers also appreciated the lighthearted humor combined with the hard truth of survival found in the Breathedge campaign. However, the team stated that while there is lore to follow, their main objective with Astrometica is crafting a fun sandbox game while focusing more on base building and exploration.

For exploration, they looked at games such as No Man’s Sky, with many procedurally generated planets while also having handcrafted points of interest for the player to seek out. There are other survivors’ outposts that you can loot, and you can unlock new building recipes by scanning different parts. Wrecks hold a random assortment of loot, and asteroids can be destroyed with a mining tool to gather ores like iron and copper.

Crafting is essential if you want to go out and explore, as not only do you need to upgrade your oxygen tank to venture further, but it also provides useful items like a jetpack, so you no longer have to float in space. However, if you’d rather cruise in style, there is always the option to build your own small ship to go out and see what there is to find. Not flying home, of course, that would be silly.

The building system plays a central role in Astrometica and will feel familiar to fans of Subnautica. Players can design their bases using square or oval-shaped habitats, and create anything from a sprawling mansion by connecting pieces closely together to more segmented rooms by linking them with thinner metal tubes placed further apart. Building a base is essential for long-term survival, as it provides a place to house fabricators for crafting, construct the spaceship, and even automate tasks. For instance, players can set up mining lasers to harvest resources from asteroids automatically.

We’ve also gotten a glimpse of what to expect during the game’s Early Access phase. If everything goes according to plan, the developers aim to launch update 1.0 in about a year. This period will be used to complete the story, expand crafting options, introduce new areas to explore, and potentially implement multiplayer if there’s strong demand from the community.

For now, Astrometica is set to launch on Steam on December 10. The game also has a free prologue if you want to check it out.
