Survival – Fountain of Youth Playtest Preview: Survive on 16th Century Caribbean Islands

Survival: Fountain of Youth is an upcoming survival game set in the 16th century. After surviving a shipwreck, you end up on uninhabited Caribbean islands. You need to do what it takes to survive and uncover the mysteries of the Fountain of Youth.

Harvesting and Crafting

The moment you appear on the beach, you can find a variety of resources to collect. Harvesting takes actual in-game time and uses your energy, so it’s worth prioritizing your daily tasks. Getting meat can be tricky at first because little crabs on the beach are fast. Unless you find a turtle that takes more time to kill.

The game has an extensive crafting system with a variety of items to unlock while exploring. You can unlock a new item blueprint by studying certain resources. The details on how to find these resources are revealed in the description so it makes it easier to find it.

Exploration

The Caribbean islands are filled with a variety of locations and secrets to discover. You can find a scorpion cave that contains special items and mission objectives. Just be aware of scorpions because they can sting you.

When traveling, you can find ancient artifacts such as drawings that reveal natives wisdom. You can also climb mountains that will lead you to new discoveries and allow you to enjoy beautiful island scenery from above.

When you feel like you need some refreshment after a hot day, you can jump in the ocean to explore the underwater world. Just make sure you don’t drown. Swimming drains your stamina and if you run out of it, you will start losing health. Once you build your boat, you will be able to travel to other islands.

Status Effects and Abilities

Your character gains different status effects by interacting with the environment. The Status Effects menu reveals information about your character state and how to recover from negative effects. Players who like managing their character’s stats will definitely enjoy this system.

The skills and abilities system provides a variety of ways to improve your character. Survival abilities allow you to boost your hunger and thirst efficiency, improve your disease and poison resistance, and more. Skills improve by engaging in activities such as crafting, harvesting, cooking, and fighting.

Enemies

While exploring the world, you are going to run into danger. One of the first enemies you are going to encounter is a rabid squirrel that barks at you. It can cause some trouble if you don’t have a weapon.

A snake is easy to deal with. Just don’t step on it, especially when you run from birds.

Birds are vicious predators that will keep attacking you on sight. And they are not easy to lose as they can follow you long distances. If you try to escape them in the open field, it can be difficult to avoid their attacks.

Death

The game has an interesting respawn system. Every time you get killed, you lose the total amount of health and decrease the amount of times you can respawn. Once you run out of it, you won’t be able to wake up and it leads to Game Over. This system is something in between the perma-death mode, where you have only 1 life, and the regular game mode where you can respawn endlessly.

The first impressions of Survival: Fountain of Youth are pretty good. If you like games such as Stranded Deep, Green Hell or The Long Dark, you will likely enjoy this one too.

The game currently runs the playtest on Steam if you would like to check it out.
