11 bit studios has finally unveiled a release date for their story-driven sci-fi survival strategy game The Alters, which has been largely influenced by their previous title, This War of Mine, as explained in the comparison video.

The Alters takes place on a hostile planet where survival is not only a matter of strategy but also a journey through the complex layers of your own identity. Jan Dolski finds himself racing against a deadly sunrise with a singular path to survival. His chance lies in creating alternate versions of himself, each formed by choices he never made in life. Every version, or alter, holds distinct skills, habits, and memories shaped by different life decisions while also carrying their own flaws, doubts, and emotional burdens.

In the game, managing yourself, including all the version of yourself, can be a challenging task. You will be responsible for maintaining a mobile base, making decisions under strict time constraints, nurturing relationships with your various alters, and facing the repercussions of past lives. The game introduces a level of complexity that requires thoughtful planning and careful risk assessment with every decision you make.

A new mechanic introduced in the trailer brings forth the concept of deadly anomalies. Mysterious phenomena will challenge your progress during planetary exploration as you encounter levitating rocks, strange distortions, and areas of heightened radioactivity among other hidden hazards. Special tools will be necessary to detect threats that may otherwise remain unseen. A careless approach can quickly lead to dire consequences such as instant death, injuries from radiation, or even the unsettling possibility of time and space unraveling. The added danger of toxic levels capable of melting your suit will further intensify the need for cautious and deliberate exploration.

The developers have set a final countdown for The Alters release, which is coming in just two months, on June 13, 2025.
