Hinterland Studio has released its first paid DLC for the Canadian winter survival game The Long Dark. Tales From the Far Territory comes with a new region, gameplay mechanics, story, and more.
Tales From the Far Territory
The DLC is split into three stories set in a new part on the island. On release one of these will be available with more to follow in the coming year.
To access this new campaign you need to follow the far range branch line, a railway hub connecting the areas. At the end of the road, you find the forsaken airfield, once a bustling airstrip for people to get onto the island which has now been abandoned. You can explore the hangars, control towers, hunter cabins, and more. This will also be where the first of three stories will take place. The other locations will be.
The industrial mine is an abandoned open-pit mining operation where you will find relics of the far territory’s past.
The mountain pass has some of the rockiest terrain and steepest cliffs on Great Bear Island and it holds dark secrets for the player to uncover.
This DLC will focus more on the narrative side of The Long Dark rather than challenges. Tales From the Far Territory will tie into the final chapter of Wintermute (the main story campaign).

Gameplay mechanics
This new expansion comes with a lot of new gameplay mechanics. The glimmer fog is a new phenomenon found on this side of the island. The fog will charge the air and ground with electrostatic energy which can lead to unexpected outcomes.
During the fog, your handheld shockwave may pick up a signal. Following this could lead you to supplies you might otherwise have not found.
With enhanced cooking, you can create dishes that will provide different gameplay effects when consuming them.
The trader will trade both supplies and information at a price of course.
Unique versions of weapons, clothing, and more can be found. Each with its own history and tuning.
A photo mode has been added to The Long Dark all be it not in the way you may have thought. You can now use a camera to take photos and process them in a dark room.
Alongside this DLC there are also a lot of smaller changes and improvements to the main game that came for free.
