Developer FakeFish has quietly been reshaping Frostrail and this week the studio offered a clear look on where the game stands as the year closes. The team says they have revisited nearly every corner of the project, and a limited playtest in November gave them their first run of real player feedback.
Artists went back to work on major visual pieces, redoing and improving large batches of assets so the game looks consistent across areas. The studio also expanded its lore and documentation and began laying the groundwork for campaign progression. On the gameplay side, the team focused on the feel of close range combat, tuning animations and hit feedback to make encounters more satisfying.
The closed November playtest put the core systems in front of players for the first time, giving testers a chance to experience the train-driving, exploration, and crafting loop. Early reactions to the game’s visual direction were positive, giving the studio confidence that the new look is heading in the right direction. At the same time, the first test highlighted several areas that need more work before a wider release.
Onboarding currently only covers the basics, and the studio plans to turn the tutorial into a fuller introduction that also serves as the start of the game’s story. AI showed limitations and combat encounters will need further polish so enemies react smarter and feel fair. Usability and accessibility received attention from testers, which prompted immediate changes such as more flexible keybindings and a commitment to redesign key interfaces for later playtests.
One notable change is the game’s visual approach. Frostrail’s style has shifted from what appeared in the reveal trailer to a more production friendly, lower fidelity look. That choice is meant to allow the small team to create more content while keeping a steady frame rate and a consistent atmosphere.
Looking ahead, the studio is focused on refining the game and introducing new features, so we can expect a more polished and content-rich playtest next year. Hopefully, it will be a more open test, allowing more players to experience the game.
