Warhammer 40K Darktide Beta Preview: Surviving as a Reject

A first look into Darktide.

Developers Fatshark held a beta test for their upcoming horde survival game Warhammer 40,000 Darktide. This is all you need to know about the playtest that ran from October 14 – 16 2022.

Character Creation

When you start the game you get to choose from four different character types. Each has its own playstyle, abilities, and weapons. From the long-ranged marksman to a big brute that is best up close. You get to choose a back story for your character from a list of different options. A new addition is the option to change to look of the character you chose. This character creator is pretty limited however.

When you level up you get access to more weapons for your class. Each weapon has a combat rating and a rarity. The rating is just how strong a weapon is and the rarity goes from common to legendary with the rarer ones gaining special boosts.

Every five levels you get to choose a new perk. Each gives you a choice from three different buffs. You can change them in the lobby if you do not like what you picked.

Missions

The beta had four different missions raid, repair, strike, and assassination. The first three are pretty similar, you go through the level and either fix something at the end or load something on a ship. Assassination is just as it sounds you go out and hunt down a boss-type enemy.

Once you reach level 11 you get access to contracts. Completing these gives you a new type of currency that you can use to buy higher-rarity weapons.

Enemies

There is a large cast of enemies in Darktide. From your common prisoner to mini-boss like bad guys. The strongest is an ogre-like monster that can absorb a lot of hits and deal a lot of damage. Others shoot toxic flames or have a minigun. There is even a dog and once he gets you they jump on top of you making you unable to get them off on your own.

That is all the beta had to offer. Did you get to play Warhammer 40,000 Darktides playtest? Let me know in the comments.
