5 Biggest Changes to Expect in State of Decay 3

The map is going to be 4x larger and will include full co-op support.

The first gameplay trailer was revealed and some players expressed concerns that the game looks too similar to its predecessor. However, as explained by the developers in a recent interview, State of Decay 3 is aiming to be a bigger and more ambitious sequel, with a greater focus on co-op, open-world freedom, settlement building, and improved combat system.

Shared world co-op

State of Decay 3 is built around a shared world that supports solo play or co-op for up to 4 players, with the option to work side by side or split up and handle different parts of the map. That is a big shift from the more limited multiplayer structure of State of Decay 2, and it looks designed to make the whole survival loop feel more connected between players.

Much larger map

According to Undead Labs, the world is about 4 times the size of a single State of Decay 2 map, and it is open from the moment players enter the game. That matters because exploration has always been a major part of this series, and a larger world gives more room for scavenging, base building, and riskier trips into dangerous zones.

Improved building system

Base building and community management are getting a deeper role too. Players can now construct settlements, maintain survivor groups, and even grow up to three bases over time. The studio also talked about a stronger settlement network, where facilities and community choices affect how a run unfolds. That gives the game a wider strategy layer than before, especially for groups who want to build toward different goals at the same time.

Combat changes

State of Decay 3 now has two melee attack types instead of one, along with dodge and a more flexible rhythm in close combat. On top of that, enemy types have been refined so different zombies behave in different ways, which should make encounters feel more varied and less predictable. Also, the new enemy hubs are meant to evolve the Plague Hearts from State of Decay 2 into something more dynamic and more dangerous. Undead Labs says each nest can behave differently, which means no two saves should play exactly the same.

Crafting and weapon improvements

Weapon crafting and the game’s maker culture are also becoming a bigger part of the experience. The trailer showed altered weapons, homemade upgrades, and scavenged gear that fits the world’s broken state. Rather than treating crafting as a simple menu system, the game seems to tie it directly into survival and the look of the world. Players will still need to scavenge carefully, though, because resources remain limited and dangerous areas can offer the best loot.

According to the developers, State of Decay 3 is built in Unreal Engine 5, and the trailer features actual gameplay footage rather than CGI. The game is set to launch in 2027 on Xbox, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Game Pass. If you don’t want to wait until next year, you can sign up for the alpha tests and be among the first players to experience the game.
