Streets of Rogue 2 Promises a Much Larger and More In-Depth Open World Experience

10,000 times bigger than the first game.

Almost 10 years ago, solo developer Matt Dabrowski set off to make Streets of Rogue, a fast-paced, easy-to-play, top-down roguelite, that had emergent systems of an immersive sim like Dues Ex, and he succeeded with the game. This time, Matt is aiming to create something a lot more ambitious in Streets of Rogue 2.

While developing Streets of Rogue, Matt mentioned that a lot of his development time was spent making sure things worked properly and allowing players a lot of freedom, which also led to loads of ways to break the game. Due to the diligent players and their feedback, he was able to find out about almost all of them, which led not only to the original game being so successful but also to providing a solid base on which to build the new one.

Streets of Rogue 2 is planned to be a huge open-world survival-crafting rogue-lite game that has all the system complexity of a turn-based open-world RPG but is friendly, accessible, and one that anyone could sit down and start having fun in.

This second installment in the Streets of Rogue universe is 10,000 times the size of a level from the first game. Matt stated he did a test and got in a car and drove from one end of the map to the other without any obstacles, and it took him a solid 10 minutes.

The map is mostly procedurally generated, with added hand-crafted individual buildings and small locations, forests, small towns, and lakes to explore, and even some big cities. We will also experience a full-day/night system, where NPCs have jobs and homes and will often visit different venues during their leisure time.

Permanence is key in this persistent world; bodies and items you drop will remain where they are, and destroyed buildings will stay destroyed. Actions do have consequences, though. If you allow gangsters to live, you will see more gangsters move in. Destroy a fud factory (a mystery meat of the universe); prices for it may go up for a while as supply is low.

We will also be able to build our own homes, with the possibility in future updates to build our own towns and cities. There is even a future possibility of changing the size of the map to be bigger or smaller.

There will be no loading or scene transitions as the whole world is going to be streamed, except when you are fast-traveling or entering a dungeon. Allowing co-op players to explore independently without having to stay close to each other. And best of all, we get to explore the world with cars, boats, and eventually airplanes.

I can’t wait to explore the streets of Rogue 2 and become the mayor of the world. What are you going to do on the streets of Rogue? Let me know in the comments below.
