There’s nothing like flying around crystal blue waters where fish, dolphins, and sharks swim below you—a nearly perfect calm. Before pirates storm your ship and demand all your treasure, that’s what The Wandering Band, the developers of Airborne Empire, have been hard at work on implementing in a recent update.
The new biome, The Tropicos Islands, has seen an uptick in weather and pirate-related activities. New quest lines will be active in the area, as well as a new city for you to visit. Every vacation destination has to have a tropical-sounding city, right? Head over to Costa Tropicos to see what you can help with. Bring an umbrella; the tropical storms can be harsh.
New buildings can be discovered, such as the Turbine Engine, Birdcage Bar, and Ferris Wheel. Boost your city’s lift with the new Turbine Engine. Your engineers will need some place to hang out after installing that new engine, so build them a Bird Cage Bar. Need some morale boosts? Why not build a Ferris Wheel? All of these can be found or unlocked in the new biome.

Finding those new unlockable items, however, will be a challenge. New surprise attack, Barrage Balloons will hide in wait, only to spring up and attack with cannons. Pirate Cruisers sail the seas, watching for their moment to board any passing vessels. Then there is the new, redesigned Pirate Tractor Beam. The Pirate Tesla Cannon has been repurposed as a Tractor Beam, capable of pulling you toward it. This gives the enemies the perfect opportunity to launch an attack and bring your city to a standstill. Of course, now that there are new pirates, they will pop up everywhere there is an open ocean, like in the previous Blackspine or the Desert biomes.
The new Airborne Empire update is now available in Early Access on Steam.
