Indie Stone launched the unstable version of Build 42 back in December 2024. For over a year now, the team has been adding more content and fixing issues as they prepare for the stable build.
Build 42.15 Unstable is out now and it introduces a full refresh of the game’s default modes and a set of changes aimed at tuning the systems added in Build 42.
The studio has kept Custom Sandbox as the place for deep tweaking, but players who prefer ready-made options will find four new official modes designed to fit different play styles. Their goal is to give a clear starting points so you can jump straight into a game that feels right without dealing with sliders.
The Apocalypse difficulty is now the canonical experience, which leans into a 1993 Kentucky vibe, with loot, animals, crops and vehicles tuned to feel authentic to that setting. Expect more firearms in the world, zombie respawn and pop loot effects turned off, and adjustments based on playtests such as reduced muscle strain impact, fences that can be battered down by focused attacks, and firearm jamming being part of the challenge.
The Outbreak mode is about shorter sessions. It trims time sinks so that non-combat skills progress more simply, refrigerators work in a friendlier way, animal and farming cycles move faster, and loot is easier to find. The idea is a tighter, still tense run you can play even when time is tight.
Extinction is the hard difficulty for veterans, where sprinters are now an official threat in this setting, supplies are sparse and enemies hit harder. This is not a mode for a first run, and it will chew through careless survivors quickly.
Rising leans into the quieter side of the game. It gives more building resources and fewer combat pressures so you can focus on making a home. It is still Project Zomboid though, so poor choices can still bring a fast end to the quiet life.
Each mode has a matching preset in Custom Sandbox so you can tweak them further. The developers say final tuning will continue as they move toward the B42 stable release, based on more playtesting and feedback.
Also, the update also follows the ammunition rework from 42.14, which cleans up ammo types and loot distribution and makes cross-compatibility worth watching. New weapons include the JS-14 5.56 rifle, the JS-3T tactical 12 gauge shotgun, the L92 .357 lever-action carbine, the L94 .30-30 hunting rifle, the MSR7T 7.62 precision rifle, and the Trapper .45 carbine.
The latest stable version for Project Zomboid is planned to come out later this year, and while it may have taken longer to release it than expected, the wait for Build 42 is going to be worth it.
