Project Zomboid-Inspired ‘Vein’ Expands the Map with New Locations and Focuses on Realism

Where are you going to spend your days surviving?

Vein is a promising upcoming survival title from a small indie development team out of Canada. Developer Ramjet Studios has stated that its goal is to make games they want to play, and they are very passionate about their debut project, which just updated to Alpha V0.010. Vein still has a lot of work ahead of it, but here are some of the most recent additions to this game.

Saranac is the town where the events in this game take place, and the map has continued to grow with more locations to explore, such as a strip mall, a bar and grill, an auto dealership, and even an American Legion, to name a few. Most of the exteriors of the POIs are complete, but the interiors need some work, and some of the larger locations are still a work in progress.

Playing with friends should now be a breeze, as the networking system has been rewritten, and now you can host servers and invite friends through Steam. A group system is also in place, allowing you to see who’s online, group up, and even make unique chat tags for your friends.

Since it’s hard to type while fighting zombies, a new spatial voice-over system has also been added, allowing you to voice chat with other players in the area. To bring a sense of realism to the game, if you are behind a wall or other obstacle, your voice will be muffled or even echo if you are in a large space. The developers are even working to let you speak through game radios and cell phones.

Sometimes walking just is not an option and you need to get somewhere fast. The developers thought so too, so two new vehicles have been added to assist us in such emergencies: the police car and the ambulance, both with working sirens, and you can even hope into the back of the ambulance. The stove inside the camper van now works, and now if you are drunk and drive, the car will randomly begin to veer off in different directions. The center mass of many vehicles has also been shifted, making them less easy to flip over.

In the apocalypse, you never know who or what you’re going to run into. Your character development is key to survival, so more stat perks have been added. With 100’s of stat perks scheduled to truly set you apart from the rest, some stats are already up to 25 and 50 perks now, as well as two new unique traits that have been added as well. The sleepwalker trait makes you wake up in random beds, and the bloodlust one fills your character with a rage that will only let him de-stress by killing things.

Another cool feature is that buildings will become dirty, rundown, and decay with time as the years pass. Currently, there is no way to clean up and refresh a dilapidated building, but that is also something on their to-do list.

There are other minor additions in this update, and you can learn more about them by checking out the devlog.

For a small indie team, Vein looks really impressive, and I’m looking forward to what the developers will come up with in the future.
