State of Decay 2 Hits a Home Run with the ‘Curveball’ update

New random events, sure to spice things up and keep you on your toes.

State of Decay has released its latest Curveball update. Every day in the post-apocalyptic world is an unpredictable challenge. Sooner or later, your community is going to get hit with a curveball, which will either be a boon or a bane to the community or just a change in the way the world works.

Sometimes luck will be in your favor and offer you a timed scenario that might offer your community a chance to find a lost supply crate, have a boost that enhances your base, or maybe even a mutational defect in a group of zombies, giving you an easier chance at dispatching them.

Or you could pull the unlucky card, and another mutational effect could offer zombies enhanced defense or stronger strength, hostile raiders setting up camp somewhere near your base, or even plague hearts themselves becoming more dangerous.

Curveball is a new series of events that contain world-changing modifiers that can happen at random or in response to something your group did. Some curveballs will be timed events, while others can be objective-oriented. Each curveball contains up to three different effects, which come in both major and minor variations. Major effects will be donated by a star symbol in the effects panel and will be very impactful and are the headliners of the event, while minor events are not as impactful but will spice things up by offering different degrees of new challenges. But be warned: Curveballs are not always a one-time event and have a chance to pop up again, but they can have different combinations, and effects that were minor before may now be major ones.

With the update also comes a new Curveball UI, which will make understanding the event a lot easier. The new menu will have a set of curveball entries that will inform you of upcoming events and any new emerging situations. This is the warning before the storm. Active entries will let you know when the Curveball appears in the world and its effects are live. And the expired entries are just what their name implies, and they will let you know which curveballs are no longer in effect. Along with the details and effects overview that will detail all active effects and which particular zombies will be affected, if there are any positive modifiers to your character, they will be marked with a green arrow, and negative modifiers will be marked with a red arrow. Just a little heads up, though: multiple curveballs can be in effect at any one time.

Not wanting to spoil it too much, they have informed us that Curveballs can affect the following things: zombie and Plague Heart mutations, allowing them to become stronger or weaker infestation areas that can produce even more varied mutations, and the addition that even plague hearts can change over time. Curveballs can also have positive or negative effects on your base or community, reflecting the good and bad days you might experience in the new world. And even world events such as increased looting chances, resource availability, and even new hostile survivors walking into town

Lastly, since some Curveballs are location-based or tied to an objective, the map has been updated to help you visualize what areas are affected by the Curveball or where relative objectives might be located. You will also receive notifications of when a new Curveball is building, when it becomes active, and even when it ends.

I can’t wait to see how these new curveballs are going to enhance the game. Let me know what your experiences are with the new update in the comments below.
