Brrrr, it’s getting cold outside as the bite of winter is upon us. ‘Tis the season, as they say, so let’s take a look at what awaits us in the coldest upcoming survival game.
The developer, DRAGO Entertainment, has shared new advanced mechanics for Winter Survival in their most recent update, and I don’t think any other survival game has these features that we are about to go over.
One of the first advanced mechanics, has to do with hunting. As you hunt for your next meal, inevitably your aim is going to be off, and you’re not going to land the kill shot. Your prey, wounded, darts off. You have a split second to think of what to do. Let it go, or hunt it down to finish the job? You never know when a wolf or pack might catch a scent and track it down; then you have to decide who eats tonight.

Next on the list is the “Wolf Party.” As you trudge through the frozen wilderness, you might stumble across a group of wolves feasting on the flesh of a fresh kill. The rumble in your belly reminds you that you haven’t eaten in days. Do you quickly try to sneak away and hope you weren’t seen, or maybe take out your torch and try to scare the wolves away, and take what scraps you can? This intriguing dynamic is sure to add some high-risk, high-reward situations to the game, and whether you can pull it off will all depend on how you hone your survival skills and how prepared you are.
The third and final mechanic is “Bear Rampage.” Imagine, you just shot a deer, but it bolted off. You locate the carcass but find a local pack of wolves already partaking in what should be your supper. With your trusty torch, you managed to scare them away and take what is yours. Once you make it back to your cabin, you find it demolished by your nemesis, the bear. Who might be back any moment, so you have to decide quickly, stay and rebuild, seek revenge, or find another place to call home?
Now that player-built structures are not safe, this is a hugely impactful mechanic that will make players realize that surviving the winter isn’t just about overcoming the elements. It is also about identifying and navigating the animal threats in the wild.
