The developers over at Emberstorm Entertainment have launched Reka, a building game with a unique Slavic setting. While it’s not a survival game by nature, I’m sure many survival enthusiasts will find it enjoyable. It has a variety of elements present in the genre, where you need to prepare food, harvest resources, build a base, and explore a large open world to uncover the secrets of the legendary witch Baba Jaga.
The game’s main focus is building and exploration. You collect materials, chop trees, cut grass, and everything else you can think of by using magic. The game makes use of a modular building system, similar to games like Raft or Survival: Fountain of Youth, where you place down square foundations and walls to quickly set something up. However, unlike the mentioned games, Reka provides smaller building blocks, so the player can add more details.
The game also offers a substantial amount of decorations like candles, paintings, books, and furniture to craft the magical home of your dreams. The fun does not stop there, as you can summon giant chicken legs that carry your base wherever you want to.

In Reka, you are an apprentice of a well-known witch, Baba Jaga. Over the course of the game, you learn more about this legendary person and unlock many useful spells. Besides the primary objectives, you can also obtain side quests. These will be located in the towns you find across the map, where you can decide to help the villagers by completing their requests, ranging from delivering ingredients, getting rid of lingering souls, or cooking up a meal or potion. On the other hand, you can also become an evil witch and hinder villagers in a variety of ways.
The landscape of Reka is randomly generated, so no two walkthroughs will be identical. There are several biomes to explore that are filled with wild animals and some of them can even be tamed, making them follow you around during your adventure.
Upon starting the game, you are prompted with a character customization screen, where you adjust a few features like the facial structure, eye color, and hairstyle. You will also get to pick the outfit and accessories to wear.

Reka now available early access on Steam. The developers stated they will provide new content, such as side quests, additional decorations, and new areas, throughout the remainder of this year.
The game currently offers the prologue and chapter one of the main questline, with the rest of the story releasing in update 1.0. For those who enjoy playing games on the Steam Deck, it’s unfortunate to say that Reka will not be supported at launch. However, the developers are looking to add this feature during the early access period.
What are your thoughts on Reka? Will you be picking up this game? Let me know in the comments.
