I am Future is a cozy survival craft sim by indie developer Mandragora, a small Armenian development team focused on bringing high-quality gaming with a focus on new interactive experiences, which I Am Future plans to be.
Have you ever wanted to wake up from a long nap and find out that you’re the last person on Earth? No job to go to, no nosey neighbors, just some gardening and some quiet, relaxing alone time — maybe some tinkering with electronic gadgets? Then grab your sun hat and your robotic hand and let me introduce you to I Am Future.
You play as an unnamed protagonist who wakes up after 6 years, 6 months, and 5 days in an Unicorp Hibernation pod. You discover that the planet was apparently wracked by devastating tsunamis that have flooded the world, and with all the people gone, the flora and fauna have re-taken over what little land there is left. Luckily, your Hibernation pod was located on the roof of a tall skyscraper, in the heart of Cospomolis, a once mighty city and the center of human civilization. You might just be the last man in the world.

Now that you are awake, you will need to learn about your new world. As you explore around the top of the skyscraper, which also serves as a bit of a tutorial introducing you to the mechanics of the game, a lighthearted soundtrack plays as you walkabout with a bounce in your step as you proclaim, “I don’t know where I am, but this place is gorgeous”.
One of the main focuses of the game is crafting, and as you traverse your rooftop paradise, you will encounter all sorts of materials to gather, including biomass from plants. Wood planks from trees and old furniture, berries from bushes, and even goo from some pests, but we will touch more on that later.
Your stomach will quickly let you know that you have not eaten in quite some time. You can, of course, eat some of the berries and plants you find out and about, but the true source of sustenance is cooking, and since there is no one left, you get to be the Gordon Ramsay of the new world. You will learn recipes by trial and error, throwing different food items into your cooking pot, but as you begin to fill your belly, you will quickly release your food sources, which are dwindling. How do you get more?
Of course, with a little bit of ingenuity and scraps, you will be able to make some makeshift planters, throw some seeds in the soil, and wait, but of course you will have to water them. Gather some salt water into a bucket, take it to your campfire, and desalinate it. If you keep your crops moist and in the sun, soon enough you will have a bountiful harvest.

Fishing is also an option since the world is flooded and you’ve got some beachfront property. You might as well chill for a bit, throw your rod into the water, and let the food come to you. I am Future has a few little mini-games to mix it up, and fishing is no exception. As you get a nibble on your line, you will have to click the mouse at the right intervals to reel in a fish, junk, or anything else that might be floating by.
While exploring or fishing, you will also come across some old-world appliances, such as tea kettles, microwaves, etc., and you will be able to disassemble them piece by piece in a relaxing puzzle-style minigame.
With these electronics, you can start to craft some automation around your roof: automatic sprinklers to keep the farm going, and an electric fence to keep the pests away. Even making some little robotic friends to keep you company and to help with the chores is such a happy time.
Then night falls, and when it does, some of those pests we talked about come out. Blue-colored squirming things called leeches that not only like to devour your plants, but also like to attach to electrical devices and leech the electricity. With some tools at hand, such as torches and bug spray, you will be able to keep them at bay, but be careful not to touch them as their oozing goo is pretty acidic to bare flesh and will cause you some harm.
Once the sun comes up, you can send some of your robotic drones to explore the city of Cospomolis and maybe even see if there are any other survivors on the planet.

The developer team has also shared with us a road map for some of the add-ons for the game, such as adding more plants that you can grow and harvest, such as almonds, chili peppers, coffee beans, and even root vegetables. They also mentioned adding in some additional pests for you to encounter and fend off, such as slow but persistent caterpillars and even dangerous Hornets. Seasonal events, new side quests, and a main story expansion Along with new builds, leech and butterfly farms, other rooftops to explore, and much more
Currently, there is a free demo on Steam for you to try out, and the early access release of the game is slated for August 8th, 2023.
The future is what you make of it—fishing, crafting, tinkering, and even napping. Welcome to Eden, your new home. What do you plan to do? Let me know in the comments below.
